“As one loses one’s memory, there’s a tendency to recede from the world. And the process of doing that is the worst thing you can do for your memory.” — University of Toronto neuroscientist Morgan Barense has created an app called the HippoCamera, which mimics part of the brain compromised in Alzheimer’s disease. She offers her Brief But Spectacular take on how to improve our relationship with those suffering from memory loss.

About Brief But Spectacular:
Brief But Spectacular is an unconventional and revealing short-form interview series that presents an in-depth look at a variety of compelling guests and ideas. These powerful narratives put a personal face on complex issues, providing a window into the human condition. The intention of the series is to invite viewers to walk in someone else’s shoes.

For the past five years, Brief But Spectacular has been broadcast nationally across the U.S. as part of the PBS NewsHour. The series was created in 2015 by Steve Goldbloom and is produced by his production company Second Peninsula, which operates in the U.S. and Canada.

The series has produced more than 200 interviews to date and earned more than 300 million views. In 2019, Brief But Spectacular was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Feature Story.

While Brief But Spectacular has profiled well-known figures like Gloria Steinem, Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, Terry Gross, Carl Reiner, and Ta-Nehisi Coates, the show has earned a broad and loyal audience through its lesser-known guests, such as Mahogany Browne, Clint Smith, and the incomparable Flossie Lewis, whose take on growing old and living well earned more than 7 million views in two weeks.

Series Creator Steve Goldbloom was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and raised in Toronto. He created Brief But Spectacular (named after his Grandfather) in 2015 and has been producing the show out of Los Angeles, where he lives with his wife and daughter. With the help of the Bell Fund and distribution partner CBC, Brief But Spectacular has arrived in Canada.
