Did you know that Vault Boy actually isn't thumbing up the charismatic way as we know it? He's checking if he's in a safe range for an active nuclear bomb:

If your thumb can cover the atom cloud completely, then it means you're in for a safe range, and wont get affected by the atom bomb what-so-ever, thus if your finger CANT cover the atom bomb's cloud, there'll be a really great chance of dying, or even getting mutated/infected by the bomb.

Oh wow, I googled this on a whim and not I can definitely tell this is my next new obsession. I love media that goes super in depth and has a lot of science around it. And I'm glad there is not some sort of infection disease like in most apocalypse media because that stuff stresses me out😅
