In the first episode of Amazon Prime’s hit TV show Fallout, we are introduced to Cooper and his ‘Rule of Thumb’ for nuclear bombs. Supposedly, if the blast cloud is smaller than your thumb, you have a chance of survival. If the cloud is bigger than your thumb? Well… let’s just say you’re in for a bad time. But is this actually true?

It’s important to remember that even if the government didn’t teach the thumb rule they did tell citizens that it was safe to hide under a desk. The thumb like the desk may have been a way to reduce panic and make people feel safer. It may have been intended purely to reduce stress and make people feel like they had some control.

I think that’s the point.

Lying to the soldiers, I mean. I always assumed it was just standard lying to the troops to make them feel better, give them false security, them thinking they have a chance, that if they see nukes going off, they can check with their thumbs, is just one of many false comforts advertised to troops.
