My narc ex was incredible right up until we got married. He became a completely different person the moment I signed that certificate. Threw away boxes of my clothes, heels, purses. Everything that made me, me. He said I was married now and no longer needed those things. The craziest part of this is my mother is also a narcissist. I had already decided I'd never be the type of wife she was so I thought if getting rid of these things I loved made my new husband happy than so be it, never realizing what he was actually doing. He was immediately stripping me of my individuality, immediately isolated me, and immediately started degrading me. Because I was so used to being told I was the problem by my mom, I also believed he was right. I now realize that after years of therapy, both he and my mother were jealous of my obvious light and ability, my authenticity and their whole plan was to destroy that in me.

100% true! My first husband started to show his true colours on the wedding night and then used me to cook for him, clean, as a free worker on his family's garden plot to help his precious parents and then for sex of course. I could stand all this slavery for 1, 5 only because I'd had been conditioned in my own narcissistic family to be "patient", that a man is always right and that it's the ultimate happiness for a woman to be married! But then I ran away from him and all his vampires and filed for divorce...

They feel powerful in petty ways at times…you mentioned the cooking. Just getting a reaction from us to them like winning some grand reward. To get us to do the simplest thing is all about power and control. When for us it’s comes from the love and care we have for others…..

Thats why I have a problem with the phrase "trauma bond" if we knew they were that way we would have never gotten with them in the first place. Theres no way that the trauma feels comforting. Its the love bombing or euphoric feeling at the beginning that keeps you stuck in the relationship.

So true I am stuck with a narc because of marriage and I only saw his true colors after we got married 😢
