Kids in foster care can be triggered by the car for a variety of reasons: they are anticipating a visit with their parents, maybe they spent time living in their car, or perhaps there are things that bring up bad memories.

Here are some considerations and ways to support. What would you add to this video? Lmk in the comments! ⬇️💛

As an ex-foster kid and someone who is repairing a lot of damage in their mental health and lifestyle who wants to adopt and/or foster once i feel stable and able, I really appreciate these videos!

Also some advice for kids who get car sick or have tummy issues, my parents always took the throw up bags from airplanes and stuck them in the car for us to reach. It reduces anxiety, makes kids feel much safer, and minimizes guilt when littles get sick in the car :)

Everyone of these lines gives an idea of what the kid would've gone through previously. "You don't have to nap." It's heart wrenching.

I love how you said we’re going to come back to THIS house. That just felt comforting and I’m sure the kids appreciated it.

I was a foster kid who emancipated out of the system with a failed adoption. I want to personally thank you for being a good foster parent and for not just doing it for the money. Kids need more people like you, who are understanding. You are so patient, and those children will benefit from that. Being rough with a foster child can re-trigger previous trauma and that is why it is so important that these kids get good loving homes, because it takes everything to recover from the stuff we go through. I was not a lucky kid. I was placed with many abusive families who lost their licenses for what they’ve done to me. My adoption failed because of abuse. So it means the world to me that you have the love in your heart to help children who are in similar situations as I was. Thank you 💙

These videos make me cry for all the compassion they demonstrate and for all those of us who desperately needed a sense of safety in our early lives.

To add to the first one, I'd say not changing those plans once they've been stated is very important. As an autistic person who struggles with changes to plans, I always hated when my dad's "we're just going to the shop" turned into "let me just pop into this place, this place and this other place while we're here".

I have no plans to have foster kids or any kind of children in my personal life, but I love these shorts. It's just so refreshing and good to see people using treating others with compassion and respect. ❤

i'm so glad you exist to tell people that their trauma is valid because so many people simply aren't willing to put in that effort and it breaks my heart

I just wanted to say thank you so much for all the important valuable information you have provided to me and other foster parents. I recently started fostering because a child in my family needed a home. Our plans are definitely to further continue with foster care as we found that there is so many children that need it! I have found by watching you My questions have been asked even before I know that I needed to know the question. you have been so valuable to me and my husband during this time! You have no idea how much you have helped us on our journey as foster parents. Thank you so much! ❤

...I feel like I'm such a crap parent due to my lack of emotional regulation due to being neglected... then I see this...

I'm bawling... this is EXACTLY how I talk to my 5 year old so she understands and feels heard... 😭😭❤️❤️

Hopefully this sticks with her for life

My grandmother always threatened to send my sister and and I or just my sister to the orphanage when we “misbehaved” and I never trusted being in the car with her. I stopped being scared of it when I became too old to be accepted into one. It’s really sweet that you take the effort to reassure them.

Your kindness and way of explaining things is amazing! My sister was a foster parent for years. I have so many great memories of the kids she had. I have many nieces and nephews for life. Everyone that she fostered has become part of the family for life. They call me and we talk. There have been some who were returned to their parents but then had to be removed again and have now become a permanent part of the family by being adopted. My life has forever been changed by the foster children my sister took in.
