My foster care bedroom!

My foster care room has evolved over time. With each child, I noticed that they felt more at ease, more quickly, with soft, comforting, and youthful spaces.

I still support them personalizing and making it their own, but now we start with a warmer tone.

How do you decorate your foster care bedroom? Let me know in the comments! ⬇️

As a child abuse survivor that was never rescued from my parents, most child abuse children do not know how to dream or "personalize", if not the parent directly telling them they do not have a right to dream or ask for anything (as in my case), the trauma of whatever situation caused their removal, is enough to shut their minds to their own dreams.
This is absolutely wonderful. I am certain it puts most children at ease.

I think that's very kind of you. First impressions matter, and this one says "happy and safe."

I've never been a foster kid, but I would definitely feel too nervous to personalize a room even if someone said it was okay. Even in college all I did was put up a single poster, I felt anything more than that was like... too much? And with foster care it's like, you're in someone else's house so it could feel disrespectful to do anything to the room even if the fp said it was okay? So it's super cool that you personalized it yourself with options to switch out decor.

As a child abuse survivor, I never got rescued from my parents and alota kids don't. A lot of kids who experience childhood trauma might not know how to "customize" or "Make it their own" room, knowing you taking care of foster kids helping them through everything. You just remind me of what I always wanted as a parent

Excellent observation; they don't come into care with the mental load available to customize a room. We need more fosters and better mental health nationwide ❤

Why is the whole room giving cloud vibes? It looks so comfy and soft and fluffy and I wanna be there.

my boyfriend was the victim of abuse as a child, we started dating long distance but now he has moved into my place for the summer. when i told him he was able to change and decorate his room as he pleased he started crying. he had never been allowed to make decisions like that before and it was his first time ever decorating his own room himself

It would so heal my inner child to kick off my shoes, collapse onto the bed, read my current book and have a loving caregiver make dinner in the kitchen, making cooking sounds and no loud banging that I can assume is anger at me.

I was in foster care in the early 2000's. I was a paycheck for that women. The world needs more people like you

it feels like walking into a home rather than a hotel 💕 when it's all set up cozy it's like someone was waiting just for you

This makes me a little more confident in our decision to go ahead and paint/make the bedroom more colorful because I didn't want them walking in and feeling like it was a mid grade hotel room... Of course I'll let my kids personalize the room if they want to, but I also want it to be a pleasant place when they first get there too.

It's comforting to walk into a room that looks lived in.

Someone else clearly enjoys this space, so I can, too. Or something like that.

I was never a foster kid, but even in my own room in my mother's home, i was absolutely unable to bring myself to personalize anything. In 7th grade a friend gifted me posters of my favourite book at that time for my birthday. I havent hung them up once. This is partially due to a strong internal resistence to let anyone know me. I think it's time for a therapist..

For a kid who probably lived in dirty white walls or maybe no walls at all, seeing a bright and cozy room and get an understanding that THIS is what every kid should have and this IS what they have now is comforting. They can understand what it is like to be in a safe environment, to build up their deprived creativity and happiness.

I just picture a small girl smiling softly in her new pink bed, hugging a soft toy she had started growing attached too. Just that girl being able to sleep comfortably without needing to stress about anyone or anything barging into her room is so heart warming.

As a former foster youth yes! It is so much better walking into a home that is already colorful and warm feeling! It puts a lot of pressure on the kids when they’re tasked with personalizing their room, it makes them feel like a burden when they ask for things they want/need. It would’ve been so nice to hug a cuddly stuffed animal the first night in a new home after losing everything I was familiar with and all sense of self.

I love the use of the colors and the plushies. For myself plushies make a safe space (I'm 23) so I know for sure most kiddos would love plushies to create their own safe space

I’m a grown adult with my own unhappy past. I have largely healed, but seeing this bedroom made me cry joyful tears. I feel so hopeful knowing there are people like you in the world who would create such a safe and happy place for children. God bless you.

I love this. Walking into a plain, bare, neutral room immediately says temporary, unexpected, it changes so much we don't bother to make it homey. This room says just for you, just for kids, you were wanted here, we expected you here, we want you to know you have have a place of your own. It's warm and friendly without being too specifically designed for an individual - lots of room to personalize.
