HOAs were meant to create a clean neighborhood and keep the property value high, but the opposite happened and no one wants to live in an HOA anymore.

Some of my favorite stories are about people who outsmart HOAs.

One guy put up a wooden fence. The HOA told him he couldn't have a fence and made him take it down. A few months later, he builds a brick wall around his property and bolts his mailbox to it because the HOA rulebook said he can have "a masonry structure to support a mailbox."

Fun Fact: they legally have to inform you if your house is part of an HOA, if they didn’t there’s things you can do (not sure what exactly, it’s been a while)

In Germany we have Gardening parcels, where you have some crazy rules.
For example it is forbidden to cut down an old tree, they are protected, except if you replace them with a young tree. But young trees are not protected so you can cut them off after you just repaleced them for the old protected tree. 😂😂😂

From a German perspective, HOAs seem to be the local "Wanted to become police officer/councilperson but didn't get accepted" association. Whenever I hear of it on Social Media, its almost every single time because Karens and Kens are yelling at their HOA members for doing something on your own property that doesn't seem inaprobiate.

Personally, I prefer tall grass and wildflowers. It gives a nice prairie look.
