Coming from Europe, the tipping culture in the US drives me round the bend. That and not putting the final price with tax on products at shops. It's always an unpleasant surprise when you arrive at the till and realise that your item costs more than what its price tag says. Honestly, sort this out, America. 😒

By definition, something that is mandatory cannot be called ‘tipping’. I loathe tipping. Tell me a price, and I’ll decide if I want to pay it. I would like all these badly-run businesses to go bust, and start again by paying their staff properly. Signed, a European.

Tipping is completely out of control here in the US, just waiting for when there is mandatory tipping at the doctor's office.

I went to the US once. The tipping and "try scam the tourist" made sure I'm not going back unelss I can stay and eat privately. "Tipping" arguments was DISGUSTING

Why they not put a sign to the front of the restaurants:
"You just pay the tip and the food is free of charge."

I'm feeling very grateful for not living in the US right now.

As a European I can’t understand it, I guess it’s the most chocking cultural gap

The only proper times to tip is when there is no service fee and at a sitdown restaurant. Most other tipping opportunities are a scam.

I have been in the US last month for work. After having seen how much they stealed from me, I will never leave a tip again. If these people have a social system that does not work, doesn't care and doesn't provide people their needs, it should not be my problem.

Paying tip is more painful than paying bill in USA 😅😅

This is why I don't eat out anymore! No one tips me for all the service I perform and I'm under paid, too. I do my job and a simple "thank you" is sufficient. Dining out in the U.S. has become nothing but extortion and exploitation coupled with crappy attitudes, incompetence, meager portions and poor quality. ...Nothing hospitable or enjoyable about any of it! So, as many a sniveling, ill-tempered food service person has recommended(demanded), I'm staying home and keeping my money!!!

If I had a server like that, he wouldn't be getting ANY tip. Also for any non-americans, there is really only a "need" to tip at sit down restaurants (and maybe bars if you're feeling friendly). Don't tip someone if all they do is turn a screen around to make you push a button!

That's the main reason I don't like the USA

Lol yes the tipping culture in America is out of control but sadly, the service would probably be abysmal if we didn't have it smh. And NEVER give a tip if the gratuity was already included! And also, make sure you calculate your tip on the actual price of the food/drink before taxes are added in! Do not tip on top of the tax! We are a country of 50 individual states and every state is different, with different tax rates.

I hate when rules are not clear. And prices are not clear upfront. Also I would hate the pressure and constant uncertanty if I paid enough or not. This system leaves the pressure between the client and server. And I go out to feel good. Result: I would avoid goind out at all costs.

Almost no restaurants do that . They never add in a tip it’s your choice what you want to tip
