Keto vs Vegan: Health Benefits. A recent study compared Keto and Vegan diets and looked at health benefits and weight loss. Let's discuss the health impact of Keto and Vegan and what the new study tells us about nutrition and health.

References:

Keto or Vegan, which is healthier?
a brand new study compared the 2 and measured their health benefits

people on vegan diet ate 7x more carbohydrates yet they lost fat. those on keto did not lose significant fat over the 1st couple weeks

that’s not to say u cant lose fat on a low carb diet. Ofc you can.

point is it’s not the carbs that make you fat. the subjects eating vegan were going to town on carbs and yet they lost fat faster

You CAN lose fat by cutting carbs. you can lose fat by cutting any food, any source of calories. Carbs, fat, even protein

I have nothing personal against keto or vegan

people on the vegan diet were satiated faster and ate less calories, in all likelihood that’s why they lost fat

"I gotta lose some weight, I should cut carbs, right?"

When’s the last time you heard that?

focus less on nutrients, the carbs and the fat and the protein. It’s about food quality

Refined carbs make it easier to gain weight
Complex carbs make it easier to maintain or lose weight

So if by “cut carbs” u mean cut candy, great move
because it’s an artificial product not bc it’s “carbs”

Otherwise next question is “oatmeal has a lot of carbs, I should cut that too”

And we all get confused into general carbophobia

more health benefits

the vegan diet lowered cholesterol but it raised triglycerides. LC diets like keto tend to do the opposite if they’re animal based

So again the key is the type of food not if its high fat or low fat. Both can be healthy

diet wars on social media, keto vs vegan, are a distraction

Vegans and low carbers have been fighting for years
health-wise: a vegan diet can be great or it can be terrible.

Same for keto. it can be healthy, lots of greens, high in fiber, or it can be unhealthy, with processed meats, low fiber and high saturated fat

So the whole vegan vs keto war is social media smoke

So to ask which is better, vegan or keto, it’s nonsensical

having an abundance and variety of unprocessed plants, that’s the golden rule. A healthy diet can be vegan or not, low carb or not, keto or not, it can be low fat, high fat, medium fat, many possibilities, pick the one that works for you and ignore the social media noise

You're so right... people think about "what do I need to cut out?", instead of, "What should I be eating?". It's too easy to think of depriving rather than adding to our diets.

First I am not in any way saying that people can’t do well on a vegan diet.

That being said, I don’t think you understand the goals of the keto diet. Carbs do in fact make it easier for you to gain weight. This is because the body must deal with carbs as a fuel source first. Too much sugar in your blood can kill you. To combat this your body will convert your excess carbs into fat by releasing insulin to trigger de novo lipogenesis. While this is going on you body can’t access its fat stores. The goal of keto is to avoid this process so that you always have access to your stored energy.

Secondly the delay in the response on your two week weight loss graph is due to it taking the body a few days to enter ketosis. When this is adjusted for you start to see similar numbers. Furthermore two weeks isn’t nearly long enough for a weight loss study.

Finally at 3:38 you showed a slide of supposedly unhealthy keto foods including eggs, cheese, beef, and chicken. Only saying that this was low in fiber and high in saturated fat. As if this is a bad thing. Saturated fat was originally demonized based on poorly conducted epidemiological studies. And further research has filed to support these findings. As for fiber, it is literally indigestible. Meaning that it’s not necessary to eat. Sure it can help with constipation. But most people on keto don’t have that. And if they do get it there’s an easy solution.

edit: fixed typo

Hi!! Im so glad i found you!! I went Vegan for 6 months hoping to bring my cholesterol down but i ended up going off the Vegan diet for a few months and i finally had my bloodwork but my cholesterol only came down 10 points. About a week ago i decided to go back to eating fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds and whole grains like legumes & oats. I decided to watch some of your videos and i realized why my cholesterol probably didn't go down much! I think it's products like Coffee mate, tortilla chips, gluten free crackers, and low fat cheese Its. I ate meat & cheese sparingly but i believe those middle isle foods and the fish & chicken was not helping my cholesterol at all. Now i eat a raw whole food diet until about 3 or 4 and then i have cooked legumes and vegetables or potatoes and steamed vegetables without any oils. Hopefully this will bring my cholesterol down. Also i am getting ground flaxseed to help. I want to know if Earth Balance has bad fats? I was using it on 100% whole wheat bread. I have a feeling it does and i want to abstain from all saturated & trans fats! I have a lot more energy since i have changed my diet. I totally agree that its the quality of food that is so important!! Thank you!! ☺

I didn't see that "increased height" joke coming. I eat a WFPB vegan diet, but that was funny!

hahah VETO/ Kegan (Vegan and keto), this video is funny especially at the end. Thanks again for this amazing video. It's definitely a social media smoke and it's good to ignore the noise. Thanks for bringing me back to the ground with common sense :)

Thank you very much! I'm a proud vegan and did try to stand on a soap box to be taller, but i fell off because it was used soap and very slippery. I broke my jaw and lost 30 pounds in 2 weeks. Best advice ever!

I remember that during my weight lost period I tried several times to introduce oatmeal and all the times my overall hunger increased instead of keeping me satiated for a long time, like some people claims it works. So I ended with the conclusion that oatmeal wasn't for me, probably due to my insulin resistance.
I'm going to try again, maybe my metabolism already healed from the insulin resistance enough.

Gil, we don’t “get confused” about carbs. The majority of us who do keto/low carb have been diagnosed at some point with a metabolic disorder like T2D, and simply realized that even after losing weight, reducing or eliminating starches and grains (even whole healthy grains) results in a better A1C. There seems to be this dissonance in the nutrition community, where the low carb community acknowledges this (while being perhaps too lax about lipids) but the Plant Based advocates simply refuse to accept this as true and blame the other side for eating too much or eating processed carbs, when neither of those are true. Even small amounts of healthy carbs cause higher glucose spikes in people with metabolic dysfunction. Us low carbers keep trying to hammer this point down, yet it always seems to fall on death ears by the plant based community.

So, I think it would be immensely helpful if maybe you can dive into the research, and conclude once and for all: for those who DO get moderately high glucose spikes from healthy carbs (say, A1C of 7%), but on the other hand are keeping their Apo-B in check due to eating a more heart-healthy diet—are those people more or less likely to die than those who eat some more animal products and no grains or starch, but do still eat plenty of veggies and are maintaining an A1C of say 5%, but with slightly elevated ApoB?

I have not managed to find a single youtube video or article addressing this question. Everyone is so focused on the extremes, but both low carb animal eaters and full vegans are ultimately both just trying to be healthy. So it would be amazing if you can make a video addressing this and shedding some light on which (A1C, Apo-B) is a bigger risk factor for all cause mortality and at which which threshold for each, so that people like myself can then determine what their ideal compromise should be. Because obviously, a low carb vegan diet _sounds_ like the solution, but in practice that diet is just incredibly restrictive and probably unsustainable long term.

Gil, are there any scientifically proven benefits of consuming liquid chlorophyll? Thanks

We must admit. there are a lot more polyphenols and antioxidants as well as potassium and magnesium which are already very low in most diets. and are absolutly essential for metabolism and muscle and heart health. in a vegan diet since a lot more fruits are accepted. That by far is better for long term anti aging diet. thats my only argument with the keto versus vegan diet.

What's a processed plant? The whole idea of keto is it's supposed to be totally natural food. Once you start eating out of a packet you're doing the wrong thing. The same goes for vegans. Trouble with vegans is, they can't live totally on vegetables.

Interesting, going vegan for a while totally slashed my triglycerides but I think on a population level I can understand why it would be the opposite. So many popular recipe ideas include adding dates, maple syrup or anything super sweet to make things taste better. Sure it's better than refined sugar but they definitely can add up if you're not paying attention to balance

What about the hormonal component of weight? It's known that giving someone insulin, or insulin raising drugs, causes weight gain. The whole idea of low carb is to reduce insulin levels. And eat less, move more, has a very poor track record.

Hey but Vegan keto also increases cholestrol and reduces triglycerides right??

Its more about high fat vs high carb rather than keto vs vegan.

Why do triglycerides increase on a vegan diet and what does this mean?

Many people have major health problems on keto because of low blood sugar.
I don't recommend a high carb diet. But definitely don't eliminate them.
I tried keto for 3 weeks and almost lost my job.
I couldn't function mentally or physically.

I find it hard to find balanced information. It's like the far right & the far left of diet. They're all so sure of themselves they refuse to find any common ground or admit the other has a point. I'm going to try both & see how i feel.
