As a television news reporter for 12 years, I've negotiated many contracts with big corporations. Rarely did my terms get denied. There are several important tactics I use to protect myself and feel good about the deals I make. Now that my husband and I are looking for a new place to live while we renovate our Airstream, I am resurrection these tactics as we negotiate leases for rental properties.

For me, rule #1 is save your money. Having some kind of backup plan and enough savings to live on means you don't need to worry about losing your job or not getting everything you want out of it. If you live paycheck to paycheck, people are going to smell your weakness from a mile away.
