1) see the others perspective
2) ask for more than you want
3) don’t take blame for the “no deal”

Thank you Derek, Me and my boss planned to use this on our client.
I negotiated with my client and said their offer was declined by my boss but i was okay with their proposal.
Our client talked with our company management and they fired my boss for declining a good proposal and appointed me in his position.

I honestly hate that tip about putting the blame on someone else. At some point you have to show that you are important to the company and that you have authority to say "no" on the company's behalf. The only thing that happens when you put the blame on someone else is that the opposing person will ask to speak to your boss... any tips for when that happens?

i don't know. once i got a job offer where the boss hiring me started with a ridicoulous offer. he probably wanted some room to negotiate but the first thing i though off is if they offer so low i have no future in that company. so i said no thanks. he off course said he could negotiate i just responded that he started off so low that unfortunatly i wish not to continue since his first offer really said how he values engineers.

Throwing your boss under the bus for failing to strike a deal?  That is a bad idea.  That means you are telling your client you are weak, and have no decision making power.  If I'm your customer I don't understand why I am negotiating with you then.  Let me talk to your boss!!!  It also tells the client that your company doesn't want their business.  This slick little sales guy in front of me does, but his company doesn't.  Why don't I find a company that does?  The first two strategies are great.  The last one is AWEFUL!!!
