Type 2 diabetes has become a pandemic and is showing no signs of slowing down. Today, the estimated worldwide prevalence of type 1 and 2 diabetes is close to 300 million. This number is predicted to rise to 439 million by 2030, with type 2 diabetes accounting for about 90% of these cases. Individuals with type 2 diabetes are often told by their doctors that their disease can be effectively managed with healthy eating, regular exercise and blood sugar monitoring. These students have created a series of three videos that simplify the complex disease process of type 2 diabetes in the hopes that better understanding will motivate patients to better manage their disease.

This video illustrates what can go wrong when blood sugar levels are too high.

It's clear that chronic high glucose levels lead to health issues, but can you clarify what's wrong with temporary glucose spikes? Like the ones caused by eating a banana or an apple. Is it a great workout for the beta cells in the pancreas to quickly ramp up insulin production? Thank you in advance, somehow I can't find any good research on this topic.

False the food should be just lower in carbs. And sugars it can have high fat, protein, or fibre content all of these three are fine.
The trick is for body to stop using excessive sugar naturally by reducing insulin and hence turning body into a fat burning machine for as long as possible.

3:32 Can you please explain the mechanism behind how high fat causes extreme elevation to the glucose? What you explained in the video does not imply that at all. It implies that only about sugar.

I understand how high sugary foods increase blood glucose. What is the pathway that fat increases high blood glucose? Cannot find any papers or textbooks that show the path that fat increases glucose. They all show fat as being mostly neutral. Only sugars and starchy foods with protein (to a lesser degree) increasing blood glucose.

Good explanation except for an error.
High saturated fat does not cause high blood glucose, nor has it been shown to raise insulin levels.

Sad that you ruined this video with the wrong dietary advice. I'm a nurse working exclusively with Type2patients and dietary advise makes this video unusable for clinical use. Check the latest ADA guidelines. Unfortunate.

Excellent explanation, except the high fat diet thing… the problem is not fat, but sugar, pasta & bread! Unless he meant to say glazed donut = fat 😆

Carbohydrates are NOT classified as essential, unlike fat and protein. An "essential" nutrient is one your body cannot make on its own. Your liver can generate all the glucose required (gluconeogenesis). This is basic metabolic knowledge. Your body will function perfectly fine without carbs (glucose/fructose). The damage to the lining of the blood vessels is real and as described. However, it is not just pressure from the perimeter but of course the main cause of heart attacks and strokes is a build-up of plaque in the arteries. This plaque is caused by damage to the arteries caused by sugar and the resultant measures the body takes to heal the damage. Too much sugar in your blood? Stop eating and drinking sugar. Carbs are sugar, plain and simple. Some spike sugar quickly and some less so. Enough of the "healthy grains" BS already. Also enough of the demonizing of dietary fat. Unlike carbs, fat is classified as "essential". Of course a high fat diet combined with a high sugar diet is terrible. If you have T2D you need to REALLY educate yourself and there is a lot of good science based info out there. My wife was T2D for 12 years and I was close to it. We cut back on carbs and sweets and her A1C is now in the normal range for the last 2 years and mine has also drastically improved. Losing 40 pounds feels really good too! Please don't fall for the "manage" your diabetes with oatmeal and whole grains garbage. My wife was losing her eyesight and about to lose a foot. Don't let it get that far. If your attitude is "well I'll just up my insulin shots and double my metformin" you have doomed yourself.
