How to Cut Weight for BJJ Without Killing Yourself in the Process

This is a basic overview for anyone whos trying to drop to a lower weight class or just lose weight and wants to do so without killing themselves in the process.

I say this, because a lot of people in BJJ literally destroy themselves trying to cut weight for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitions. And in most cases it isn’t necessary and there is a better way to do things.

So in the video I share some of the simplest weight cutting tips that you can implement to lose weight slowly and intelligently. To lose weight without losing tons of muscle and without destroying your training and performance.

Hope the video is useful!

Oh and if you want to see my diet click the link below. This is pretty much my diet all the time. I simply eat varying amounts of food depending on my goals at the time.

Also, if you want to hire someone to write out your diet for you and be a remote coach to keep you accountable. I can’t recommend my buddy Eli enough. He’s been one of my coaches for the last 2 years and hiring him was one of the best decisions for my performance, health and physical appearance.

Talk to you next time.

Adam has a great comedic gift. His facial expressions are fantastic!

Great video. Award to Adam for his performance. I've been following essentially this advice for the past 7 or so weeks and I'm a week and half out with two pounds to go (down 13) and feeling pretty good. For this meet I only have to make weight once so the refeed advice isn't useful this time but in the future, I think that protip about using the check scale to account for food is great.

I’ve been watching your channel for years now and I’ve never seen this one. Chef’s kiss.

needed this video, I competed a couple weeks ago and want to compete again end of next month. And I was in >208 and wirghed in pretty easy at 201 with the gi, and now I’m thinking I might do >182 at least 195. Since I easily made 208 so this is great thank you, I probably will still throw in some sauna work for losing weight but also regular benefits. Thanks chewy! I’m in socal but have always wanted to check out your gym! Thank you

Perfect timing in this video because I have a competition this Saturday in Lexington!

What I gathered as I do my cut right now:

Keep consistent cardio but don't overdo it
Don't starve yourself - caloric deficit is good enough, but make sure your diet is consistent and healthy
A cut should be at least 4 weeks long - longer cuts tend to be safer
Weigh yourself regularly in the morning for high accuracy
If your weight dropping slows down, just eat a little bit less (no starving) - meal prepping helps

HECK YEAH 100% AGREE with this. If its a big comp that you have to weigh in with your gi the day of, absolutely do it this way. You end up stepping on the mat an absolute beast compared to your opponent across from you who starved and sweated themselves out in the last 24 hours. You'll feel unstoppable.

Great video! Thank you. I'm too close to comp (it's on Saturday) to make use of it this time, but you bet I will next time!

Dude, these videos with Adam acting are terrific. Hilarious, informative, useful. Can't ask for more. I watch all your videos, even the ones that are on BJJ subjects I don't think I'm interested in because you keep them so entertaining and intriguing. Keep it up!

This is amazing and something I didn't notice before.

Adam is just 1lb lighter than Brandon, he looks much lighter.

We need another one of these videos but I'm curious how to lose weight while: not training (maybe once a week?), drinking a ton of bourbon and not giving up my snacky snacks.

I was considering cutting weight going down to 61kg instead of 67.5kg but I think a few kg difference skills matter most IMO. Unless your doing shows, competing at the higher level or there is a big weight differential between the weight classes I just say compete at your walking weight
