Something that is not mentioned here is that the screen scanout (the time it takes for the screen to render the frame top to bottom) remains fixed at 1000/120 sec regardless of the framerate. For example when using 120hz and vrr if the game has 55 fps, the screen will refresh at 55 hz but each frame will be presented on screen in 1000/120=8.3 ms. You can read more about that in blurbusters gsync 101 article.

People need to hear this. It's good to get information out. 🙏

great video as always!

I do find it rather curious why we never had the slew of videos of YouTube explaining what VRR is, when it was just the PC and Series X/S that had the feature.

In the case of VRR technical yes, but I dont consider a doubled frame a new frame and thus say VRR has sometimes a higher refreshrate then the frames per seconds.

Appreciate this informative piece. Especially considering I use the LG C1, I can cross reference while watching!

Fidelity mode for Insomniac games use LFC frame tripling since its outside of VRR range.

I've been trying to find an answer to a nagging issue that seems to fly under the radar for most people, does VRR disable Vsync in games? Many games force triple-buffered Vsync, which adds a frustrating amount of latency and makes aiming a real challenge. I've even found Doom Eternal unplayable due to this. So, my question is, can VRR be the solution to this problem, or is there simply no way to get rid of it? I really don't want to deal with 75ms+ of latency in fast-paced games. Any suggestions to reduce this latency would be greatly appreciated. (Just to clarify, I play on a 4K 60Hz display with a 15ms latency, not a TV, so the "game mode" solution doesn't apply here, and games without Vsync, like Rocket League, work fine for me).

This is definitely a game changer no more stuttering a lot more ps5 games going beyond 60 fps no more locking to 30 or 60 fps unless your tv doesn’t support vrr

VRR breaks down the refresh rate which is calculated per second into rate per ms. That is it. With VRR you get more frames in rendering.

I dont understand the point. For example, if I have a monitor that is refreshing constantly at 144hz but I'm getting 120 frames, am I not still seeing the same 'smoothness'? How does having VRR matching my refresh rate to the frames make any difference for 'smoothness'

hmm on my TCL 55C641 VRR is turned on and in Life is Strange True Colors it says 60 but it keeps jumping between 48-60FPS but it still feels like 30 FPS. same goes for 4k/60FPS Forbidden west. the 30 FPS cap increases from 30 to 48 with VRR turned on.

So if a turn call of duty 120 hz off to 60 hz and my vrr is on what frame rate will it do I ask this because when I’m 60 hz the resolution is a little better so if I do this I can keep the great look and would this push it to 120 hz
