Refresh Rate vs FPS - What Is The Difference? [Simple]

So what exactly is the difference between refresh rate (measured in Hz) and FPS (frames per second or frame rate)? Is Hz the same as FPS?

In this video, we'll explain the differences between refresh rate and FPS, and also explain how they are measured. We'll also get into V-Sync and VRR such as FreeSync and G-Sync.

Keep watching!

Refresh = limit.
If you have a 60hz monitor even if u have 300 fps you won't get more than 60 fps

Your narrating is spot on, not sure why you dont have 500k subs. Excellent channel! ❤

So if my laptop comes with a 60hz panel and I’m able to get 140fps from a game and I connect a 144hz monitor to it will I get the full 100+FPS experience???

This helped me a lot! Thank you very much! Only thing that you could improve is getting video that matches with the screen, because sometimes the player is doing something and the screen doesn’t match their movements (this isn’t a huge deal though). Thank you again!

Aren't you wrong about this one? You will still feel the difference if your FPS is way higher than monitor refresh rate. Like 300 FPS vs 60hz monitor, aren't u?

There's misinformation here when it comes to no benefits of higher fps with a lower refresh rate (very wrong), monitors only being freesync or gsync compatible and not having the capability of being both, and perhaps more misinformation I've forgotten about, I suggest this channel puts in more effort to prevent such misinformation, thank you, and feel free to let me know if help is needed.

so i was taught that the refresh rate is really just the monitor refreshing that many times and is not dependent on what the GPU can do . meaning if you have 120hz monitor the screen wil l refresh that many times even if your are only getting 60fps in game.. But at the time we didnt have the Tech we have now in GPUS, the software will now sync refresh rate with the performance of the gpu to get a better gaming experiencing. But there is a difference like you said in 60hz at 60fps Vs 60hz at 120 fps. a lot of ppl are getting confused that they are the same thing or they effect each other but they dont its the really the software saying hay you dont have the performance to utilize refresh rate above 120 so were going to limit it . Great video very easy to understand and informative .

Would you rather drop VRR and keep 120 FPS or keep VRR and drop 120 FPS? The VRR monitor I have caps at 75 FPS. I don’t get VRR with the 120 FPS though.

From Nvidia's Pascal series gpu's with updated driver supports freesynce, you should have mentioned. BTW the video is informative . NICE WORK👍

Great video. Only correction I would make is these days Freesync monitors work with Gsync, at least most do.

This was extremely helpful. I was wondering why my laptop was getting 140-160fps, but it seemed choppy still. I thought it was my FPS dropping, but this explains playing on my 60hz monitor is doing no justice!
