5. Old English Sheepdog: Playful demeanour, intelligent and needs to be with family. These dogs do not enjoy being alone. Excellent with children and good-natured.
6. Australian Cattle dog: Resilient, alert and aloof. Relatively good family dogs and good with other dogs.
7. Central Asian Shepherd Dog: Fearless, proud and courageous. They are protective and independent. Work relatively well as family dogs but need supervision as they are naturally protective.
8. Belgian Shepherd Malinois: Versatile and reliant on its owner, the Belgian Malinois requires the company of their owner as it is a people-oriented breed.
Care & Grooming
1. German Shepherd: Medium length, double coat which is easy to maintain. Occasional bathing and regular brushing are required. They are extremely active and athletic. They require exercise often to prevent undesirable behaviours.
2. Australian Shepherd: Waterproof, double-layer coat requires weekly brushing. During shedding season use an undercoat rake and a wire brush to remove unwanted hair and keep clean. Bathing required occasionally. Exercise is needed daily for an hour or two due to high energy.
3. Briard: Brush several times a week using a pin brush and an undercoat rake to clean the coat properly. Bathing depends on the lifestyle but can be weekly to monthly or less. A Briard is best suited to an active job or take them along on jogs or hikes.
4. South Russian Shepherd Dog: Furry undercoat and long topcoat and it requires daily brushing. Occasional bathing is needed. High energy breed and they need about an hour of daily exercise.
5. Old English Sheepdog: Double-coated therefore requires proper grooming to the skin each week to maintain their coats. Brushing and haircuts between baths are essential. They require some regular exercise however it depends on the individual activity level.
6. Australian Cattle Dog: Smooth, double-layered coat that protects them from outdoor elements. A quick brush each week and an occasional bath to maintain their coat. They are very active. It is ideal for them to have a job such as herding on the farm. Dog sports are ideal.
7. Central Asian Shepherd: Intermittent grooming and occasional bathing is suitable as their under-coat is well developed. Once a year they shed and have a “fur storm” which will require more grooming. Their ears need to be checked regularly for wax and debris to avoid infection. This breed has low energy, but they have the endurance for daily walks and hiking.
8. Belgian Shepherd Malinois: Short, waterproof coat which is easy to maintain. Occasional brushing using a medium-bristle brush is most suitable for hair growth and oil distribution through their coats. During shedding periods brush daily. They need thorough exercise daily alongside their human.
