THE 5 TYPES OF GERMAM SHEPHERD DOGS OUTLINED HERE: 👇👇👇👇
1️⃣1) West-German Working Line (refering to west Germany)
a. This is the most popular GSD with a shorter hair coat and are calmer and more friendly around new people and children and recommended for families. They are said to make the best family pets with the best temperament.

2️⃣2) American Show Lines German Shepherds:
a. These dog's are bred for show purposes. They can have a shorter or long coat. They generally are not used as working dog's or in guarding competitions. And mostly sold as companion pets.
b. These are the most common German Shepherd available in America and Canada, They have a mixture of different bloodlines but do have a distinguished look.
c. They have shorter muzzels, a slopping gait and longer hocks than other lines, they have thicker under bellies and thinner heads as well. When it comes to color this breed is usually black and tan and the color white is allowed.
d. Make sure to get an American GSD with a pedigree to know what temperament your getting. There are a lot of backyard bred American GSDs that will have mystery personalities and temperaments.

3️⃣3) West German show lines or European Show Line German shepherds –
a. They are known for being the most good looking out of the 5 types of GSDS.
b. They have a black and red fur color.
c. Because of their gorgeous looks, they make great show dog's.
d. They are very similar to the American show lines but have alittle more of a guarding and protecting instinct to be a working dog.
e. The European show line GSDs also make great pets and are better with children.

4️⃣4) East German DDR Working Line (Dourche democratic republic – meaning east Germany)
a. The East lines are on the bigger side when compared to the 4 other types. They have a thick double coat. They are strong working dog's and often used as police dog's, military dog's and rescue dog's. They have a high prey drive and are triggered easily and should be monitored around humans.
b. They regularly come in black and have the darkest color among all the working lines.
c. This type of german shepherd is very intelligent but can be aggressive towards strangers.
d. They are often not recommended to have around children.
e. The East German DDR have very strict breeding rules and can only breed if they are free of hip dysplasia and other diseases.

5️⃣5) Czech Working line German Shepherds
a. They are the smallest, leanest type of German shepherd, making them more agile and gracefull. They usually have smaller ears than other GSDs and have a short rough coat that’s easy to maintain and come in the sable color.
b. They are calmer but are still labor intensive dog's, with great protection drive for police work and guarding but are not as aggressive as the East German lines.
c. They are better as pets around children, but monitoring any GSD around kids is recommended.
d. And like the Eastern dog's they have strick breeding rights and are generally very healthy dog's.

I had an East German Shepherd/ Czechoslovakian dog. He was from a long line of police dogs. His sire was a K9 patrol dog for a city here in Michigan. His dame was a bomb detection dog. We got our Zorro when he was a 7 week old puppy. He grew to be a large big boned boy with a large beautiful head and and a nice straight back. He was 110 pounds of pure muscle. He had a great personality but he did have some aggression.. I didn't know anything about german shepherds when I got him. My husband didn't want me to neuter him and so I didn't. According to this sweet veterinarian in this video that would have been a dangerous combination his being from the Eastern line and not neutered. He never attacked anyone thankfully but he scared the poop out of anyone coming in his territory without invitation with his intimidating bark and looks. He was though, a sweet guy to all who came over to visit and was extra gentle with children and the elderly. I must have done something right because he was very respectful and cooperative to any of our veterinarian staff which also watched he and his brother and best buddy Fabio, our pomeranian when we would vacation. Zorro was the best dog I ever owned. He made me feel so safe and loved. He gave hugs all the time, too. He was just a gentle giant for the most part. Sadly, we only had him for 11 years and 5 months and had to put him down last July. I will never forget that dog. He was an amazing companion, protector and friend.

I have a male Eastern line working shepherd and he is the smartest dog I've ever owned. He knows verbal and non verbal commands, loves to search using his nose, highly intuitive (sometimes it scares me), innately protective over me and family members and loves children. Despite being nine, he still has the same intensity and drive as he did when he was a teenager. The only difference is; he not as fast as he use to be (especially against my Malinois), but still has the torque power. I wish he loved to cuddle, but never took to it. Not even as a puppy. He loves to be loved on, just not cuddled. If I could have another one of him, I would without question.

I had my West working line Shepard for over 12 years before she sadly passed away last month. She was the sweetest and most empathetic dog I’ve ever had. She was intelligent, full of energy and so great with kids. The first time she saw a child was when she was 4 years old and our friends brought their 1 year old son over. They wanted Trixie, our GSD, to meet him. I was a little nervous not knowing how she would respond, but she instantly fell in love with their baby boy and was so gentle with him as she played with him. Later on she met more and more of our friends’ kids and just adored them all. Easily the best dog I’ve ever had and would absolutely get another once our baby is born and is a little older. I’ve had family members that don’t understand GSDs constantly tell me that they’re too aggressive to be around kids. If you’re talking about the East DDR, then I would agree that it’s probably not a good idea, but for the West, I wouldn’t want another dog for our family.

For me, the most beautiful German Shepherd Dog is the Old German Shepherd Dog.
The Old German Shepherd Dog is not an independent dog breed recognized by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale), but the long-haired variant of the German Shepherd Dog. Its ancestors were herding dogs from southern and central German regions. Breeding of the German Shepherd Dog began in 1899 with the aim of creating a versatile working dog. The Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde e. V. (SV) was responsible for the breed standards from the very beginning. Over time, the association excluded more and more varieties from breeding - including the longhaired dog in 1930. This was met with incomprehension by many enthusiasts. They organized themselves into their own clubs and began breeding the Old German Shepherd Dog, which differs from the German Shepherd only in its coat. It was not until 2010 that the SV included the longstock variety in the breed standards again.

Hello, I am from Germany. I had a lot to do with German shepherds 30 years ago. It is true that there was a time when this "Tail Dragger" style type of breed was very popular here. However, over time, with increasing problems, this process was reversed. Many still don't have a really straight back, but it's not as bad as it was back then. A rethink has also taken place in West Germany. I would not recommend a working line dog to everyone. They are high energy dogs and very demanding. If you are a low energy person, the dog will try to dominate you. And believe me, a male GSD can be really tough. Especially if he has come to the conclusion that he is the leader of the pack. So don't always want the best but choose the one that you feel suits you best. A Show line GSD can also be a very nice dog. It also depends a lot on the breeder.

My GSD is 110 lbs and a big baby. Not sure what line he is but he’s my fourth GSD and absolutely beautiful. My first was a police K9 and was German but this guy was a rescue at 6 months and he was already 80 lbs. Flat back is the way to go. None of mine have had hip issues and my last boy lived to be 14. Best breed ever 💙🐾

I've had a lot of different types of dogs over 70 years, Rottie, Dobe, Golden, Corgi and a West German working line GSD. The 'doggiest' dog, if that makes any sense, was the GSD. I rescued her before she was going to be shot by an idiot who was told that as a female she wouldn't be any good as a protection/attack dog. The smartest, most confident, loyal and well adjusted dog I ever had, after de-programming her for a few months. She lived almost 15 years and was loved by anyone who knew her and she loved them back.

My 97pound lapdog, Gerda, is my third East German GSD. I was shocked to hear them characterized as being aggressive and possibly even dangerous. Nothing could be further from the truth for all three of mine. They have all been delightful companions and family dogs with amazing intelligence and communication skills. I have recently begun training Gerda as a mobility service dog to help me as I am afflicted with a degenerative spinal condition that is becoming increasingly debilitating. She seems to be a natural. She is so calm and focused and learns so quickly. She is not the least bit aggressive and is always a perfect lady when in public. I think that there must be a good deal of variation in temperament and that early socialization makes a huge difference.

I personally find the sable working lines to be better looking than the show lines.

I have 2 GSDs. One is East German lines and boy, that dog is ALWAYS on. Super protective, the energy of a malinois, and extremely headstrong. He is thin and wiry, but stronger than you could ever imagine. Even after having him neutered, he is horribly dog aggresive and always on guard with people. He is a fantastic natural herder, and is unbelievably smart. He picks up language cues faster than any dog I've ever seen. My other one is a biscuit colored female, American and European lines. She is about as aggressive as a marshmallow, but she will patrol and bark at strangers to sound an alarm. She was bred for personality, and she REALLY has a wonderful companionship personality. Always beside us no matter what and very affectionate. She is an amazing natural herder, as well as extremely athletic. I wouldn't say she is nearly as smart as our East German boy, she is really miles behind him as far as intelligence. There's just no comparison. To anyone wanting one of these dogs-DO NOT get one unless everyone in your family has a strong, leader-type personality, and for heaven's sake do not ever get one unless everyone in the family can physically handle a dog that strong. Seriously, they are very rough animals and have no idea. They play rough and aggressive, they live rough and aggressive a lot of the time. They also have puppy brains for at least 2 years. It can be rough if you aren't the right type of person to put up with it. Yes, you can train them to be less toothy when playing, but it isn't fool proof. Interact with this breed a lot before you buy.

Thank you for the post I purchased a German shepherd puppy from pet land best thing that has ever happened to me. Love her she is a great companion. She’s full of energy she loves going on walks hiking playing catch with me. She’s a worker too. Everytime I’m working on something seems like she’s always there to help assist. She goes with me just about everywhere to lowes home improvement store or loves going for car rides to the park. We do just about everything together I feel so bad when I have to leave and can’t take her ti work with me. The great news is when I come home she’s always excited to see me regardless of what time it is. Always gives me a warm welcome I know I have been missed. Thank you for your channel wish they had more videos of these wonderful animals

East German Working line is what I have. She comes in at a lean 100 lbs and is all about protecting her family. She is good with children and will protect a child she does not know if she thinks they are in danger. My trainers called her an ultimate shepherd and is a fantastic dog.

I have 2 all black GSDs, who are 2 years old. One is a DDR working line and the other is a long hair Czech working line. They are both amazing, gentle girls. They have been thoroughly socialized since they were 4 months old, and that makes such a difference. They are also given the opportunity to play and get their much needed exercise.

I had a longer coat German Shepard and I found her easy. She was around other dogs and people since she was little. Her mother was white. I got her off of a farm in Michigan. She was an easy dog. She was not really exposed to children until she was about three. It took her less than a half hour to fall in love. I got her son back when he was about two and he was a bit headstrong but a good boy. I love Shepard’s. She loved to run trails and open spaces when we went to Michigan. You can’t have them in an apartment. They need a yard. They loved the kid’s playgrounds. I showed them how to go down the slides. They couldn’t get enough of that. I taught them to not be aggressive and all it took was one time. You can’t let them be aggressive with other animals or people. Training is a must because of their size.

The german shepherd dog did not start in the 1960's. They started back in the mid to later half of the 19th century. Fun fact, it was a gsd that saved Warner Brothers from being bankrupt back in the 1920's and that dog was Rin Tin Tin. He was brought back from Germany after WWI. White gsd are not allowed in AKC show events sadly and infact are being bred as a seperate breed because of this which is stupid in my opinion, I don't mean breeding them is stupid I mean that the AKC and the American GSD club is stupid for not allowing these beautiful dogs to be shown. However, the AKC will register them and you can do other AKC events just not in the show ring. The white gsd are great dogs and I can understand why many fans of the white gsd loves them so much. Good luck to those trying to make them a better breed and in their efforts to set them apart so the AKC will reconize them

Technically not a GSD, but I love the Shiloh Shepherd! Bred mostly from German lines starting in the 1970s, but with a tiny bit of Malamute as well. Some have short coats, but most are long coated dogs. More laid back than the GSD and with a less aggressive temperament, the Shiloh makes an excellent family pet and protector of children. They tend to be even larger than GSDs, come in many colors, and are stunning dogs. Internal breed politics has caused them to have THREE separate registries, but all of them have strict breeding standards. This is good, because the breeding pool is relatively small and inbreeding is always a concern. I have two Shilohs and they are the best dogs I've ever owned.
