German Shepherd Types - 5 Types of German Shepherds

Curious about the different types of German Shepherds? German Shepherds come in many different sizes and shapes. In this video, we share 5 different types of German Shepherds.

Here are the five different types of German Shepherd breeds:
1. American Show Lines German Shepherds
The American Show Line German Shepherds are also called the AKC Lines GSDs. This type of German Shepherds is generally taller and longer. They come in different colors like black and tan saddle, solid black, saddle sable, and solid white.
The coloring of the American Show Line German Shepherd's coat is typically lighter. This type of German Shepherd is generally more laid-back. American Show Lines GSDs have the lower drive, means they have less energy as compared to Working Line GSDs.

2. West Show Line German Shepherds
The West German Show Line German Shepherds are widely considered as the most beautiful GSD breed. They are very gracious in movement. They are very intelligent can be trained very easily. The West Show Line German Shepherds also have a slopped body, but it is not as sloppy as American Show Line German Shepherds.

3. West Working Line German Shepherds
The West Working Line German Shepherds have a very stable temperament and got stunning looks. These GSDs have strong drives and excellent working ability. These West Working Line GSDs have very calmer attitude and perfect colors.
The West Working Lines GSDs have different colors like sable, black, bi-color, and black and tan. The back of West Working Line German Shepherds is bit more sloppy than the East Working Line DDR German Shepherds. These GSDs could counter more health issues than the East Working Line GSDs.

4. East Working Line DDR German Shepherds
The East Working Line GSDs have the darkest colored coats among all GSD Lines. They are mostly black sable or sable, but some can be solid black, but it is very rare. Their backs are a little sloppy. These GSDs can resist extremely harsh weather conditions and long working days. These GSDs are more defensive and stuffy in nature.
The East Working Line DDR German Shepherd have very strict breeding standards. These GSDs are only allowed to breed if they are fit and free of hip dysplasia. Even puppies are tested for proper bone structure code quality temperament. If the bones in hip joint don't fit together correctly, one can develop a condition called hip dysplasia.

5. Czech Working Line German Shepherds
These GSDs coats have dark coloring. These Czech GSDs can often be found by their darker coats and less sloppy backs. These GSDs have more uniform coloring like wolfish gray, dark brown to black. Their ears are slightly smaller than the other 4 GSD breeds.
These dogs also have very strict standards for breeding and that's why they are very healthy like East Working Line DDR GSDs. These dogs have the least behavioral problems as compared to other four types of GSDs. These Working Line GSDs are best for chasing down criminals, patrolling border territories, protection jobs and search & rescue operations.

I have had many over the last 50 years or so.
I work with GSD rescues, foster, foster failed ... you get the picture.
The ones I have adopted have lived between 15 and 18 years.
I cannot imagine life without a GSD by my side! <3

I have two females West Show Line German Shepherds. Are my favorite breed. They are amazing dogs very loyal and very gentle dogs. Specialy for children. they love my grandchilds and protect then with their lives.

I adopted a SLAUGHTERHOUSE GERMAN SHEPHERD FROM CHINA. At first he was extremely apprehensive and very anti social. Everyone was saying that I should put him down because he was too aggressive. I decided to reach into the wolf that was in his genetic code and bringing him back to being a domesticated dog. I started feeding him raw Bison meat the hind quarters of the Bison and Elks. Then I started making Bison Deer, Elks, Goats and Lamb treats and Jerky. Now he's a total CREAM PUFF! Very often he even sleeps in my bed with me and nuzzles his nose under my arm and neck. He's a KING SHEPHERD and he is one hundred and seven pounds. But he is as agile as a Ballerina.

I have a Czech working line male and a German show line female. There's a huge difference in temperament. It's all business all the time with the male.

Finally some one made a video outlining the 5 types of these dogs. Do plenty of research on the breeders before wading in to any dog purchase. For me a European Shepard is a requirement.

I had German Shefard black and tan. German Shefards are terrific intelligent, obedient, loyal and excellent in all respects. Really it was pleasure beyond imagination. 👌👌👌👍👍👍

Is there a size difference between the work lines? Czech you say it's the healthier of the 3 working ones but are they all the same size except for the other 2 that have slight sloping backs? One day I would like to own a healthy gersman shepherd and I really dislike the sloping of the back so the show lines are automatically out of the list. I would prefer a big size German shepherd that's why I ask about size difference. Anyone that knows about this or has owned those breeds?
