Today we are going to take a look at a meta analysis, to find our how cardio affects our gains. Now there is a reason we add cardio into our training and it may not be the same for each individual. For some it might be for the overall health benefits it provides, others maybe using it as a tool for weight loss.

For me cardio also provides a way to reduce my resting heart rate and improves my heart stroke volume. Which in turn improves athletic performance and has a positive affect on longevity.

this analiysis focused on how endurance training affects resistance training by looking at measures of strength, power, and hypertrophy.

They looked at two types of cardio training, running and cycling. and both had very different results.

Hat's off to folks like Lawrence who take care of their bodies. This man looks better than most young guys. He's my incentive to keep working out in my golden years, he rocks.
My goal is to look as hot as him in just a bow tie.

Absolutely correct!! I am 61 years old and I have been following a run- weight resistant training for over 35 years .I warm up for 10 minutes then run for 20 to 35 minutes.I cool down for 20 minutes then do a split weight training for 30 minutes.I conclude with ten minutes of stretching.I am 5ft 11 and weigh 190 and am muscular.Built similar to you!! Both programs work! Followed as you said.thanks for the great info !!!

20 - 30 minutes of stationary bike every other day increased my stamina for weight training much faster than I thought possible. I feel like cardio made my weight training workouts the best they can be, as long as the cardio is not over done. My thinking is that cardio helps you achieve improved muscle hypertrophy as long as everything else is good (sleep, diet, water intake, not too short or too excessive rest between workouts, etc.).

I find that interesting in the study the cycling group didn't do as-well for losing weight but better for hypertrophy.

It depends a lot about diet. When I was 26, I lifted quite a lot of weights. I had hit a level where I was training hard, but could not get stronger or bigger. Then I started cycling in a club 3 times a week, and lifted less weights. I gained 3 kg and became stronger in the gym- and I felt better and more healthy than when I was only lifting weights.
PS. It also depends a lot about body type, which balance between cardio and weight traing is best for you.

The best book I ever read about cardio (resp running theory) is "Jack Daniels: Run Formula". Besides: Your information are very helpfull - as it was to be expected! :-)

I wish they covered more than running and cycling. I spend an hour on the treadmill (3.2 mph, 4 degree incline) and enjoy the sweat pouring off of me. Now, I will concede, that after all of this, I find my 'fuel tank' running a bit low for my weights, which I do afterward. However, right now I really want to shed that last 10 pounds and I feel that extra cardio is certainly helping there. Then I can scale the cardio time down a bit and have more left in my fuel tank for weights :)
