How I Negotiated 20% Pay Raises 6 Times in a Row

I worked in engineering and time after time, I consistently managed to get 20-25% pay increases either during the same job or when switching. I must say, it takes less effort to get the increase when switching because it appears more normal. Such a large increase within the same company usually means exceptional work or that you got promoted.

Yes! I switched companies 18 months ago, and I got $21k increase. I'm switching companies again this month and I am getting an 11k increase. So, I'm making $32k more now, than I was 18mo ago. Feels great.

LOL. you go on interviews even when you're not looking for a job. That is genius, I really like your channel.

1. Shop around. Don't be lazy. Go on interviews.
2. Have leverage. It shows when you're negotiating. Have a stable job. You can also just get any job first and then use that as leverage for the next job.
3. Look at what they're asking from you that is over and beyond what is normal. That's your negotiating chip. Identify them and use them.
4. Give a reason for them to pay you more. Ex. skill.
5. Know the situation you're in. Do they really need you? Do they really want you to stay? See if you can play one off another.
6. Know when to not press your luck. Sometimes you have leverage. Sometimes you can bluff. Sometimes you don't and can't. Then you can go the safe route and take it as it is.
7.Identify the job that you want and expect a certain salary. Sometimes there are moonshots. Have a number in mind when you're applying for jobs.

Being a skilled engineer in silicon valley is one thing. Most of us subscribers aren't even close to being able to implement this into our work life. Really interesting video though!

Amazing content. More people need to value their worth. Too many times I see people complain, but will settle at a job they hate because it's the safer route.

50k would be 149k after 6 raises
60k would be 179k after 6 raises
75k would be 224k
after 6 raises

I have a couple friends in the semiconductor industry who work as engineers - they have had a similar experience in companies bidding for their services - but they work long hours, always on call and have high levels of stress. I also value relative stability in my living situation, so I guess this rapid salary increase probably isn't in my future, but it was an interesting video even still!

Live in SF. You need 20% raises just to keep CoL in control

Do hiring managers not get annoyed when they find out you’re not “actually looking for a job” during the interview?

If you happen to be your boss's type, then you can offer your bush, or offer to beat your boss's bush and even 50% raise is possible

I made an 18k jump between companies in 2012. I went from 42k to 60k. I am now at 71k just from annual increases in the same company since then. The increases are only like 2.5% but they are given even if you don't ask. I did ask once but only got 4%. This man got lucky and lives in a dream world. In my world, called earth, you have to get a huge promotion to get a 20% bump even once, let alone 6 times!

You got the increase because it’s hard to get people with the same skills as you !! If you a fast food worker they will laugh at u

I have had similar experiences in my past as a software engineer. I didn't go as far as pitting one employer against another but rather I was ready to move on so I didn't want to negotiate with my present employer. I typically gained 20-30% raises each time I moved, roughly every 3-4 years (not in Silicon Valley). Employers depend on their employees getting comfortable, when they are comfortable, they don't expect you to look around. Work hard, do your best and always keep your ear to the ground and you will see similar results.

If you are worth it the sky is the limit! Good for you. I got 7 raises in 6 years at my first job, I asked for 5 of them. Coworkers were sad that they didnt got raises, but they never asked either.

I negotiated 30% salary increase for my 2nd year only because I was seriously low balled during my first year :(

What if they say “no, this salary we’re offering you already takes into consideration that the expectation is 50 hours/week”?

The more value you can provide, the more you have to negotiate!
