7 years of E39 M5 ownership and there's a lot to love. Here are 6 reasons that the BMW is still special to me. Of course I love the powertrain, but there's some quirky timeless features that I would miss if it were gone.

What's the longest you've owned a car, and why did you keep it?

While I don't have your knowledge about this car my 6 reasons I adore it are
1. The timeless look
2. How its simplicity makes it age better than it's successors
3. The exhaust note
4. How this car is set up to cruise at triple-digit speeds (not legal in North America)
5. A great blend of performance, luxury, & practicality
6. The amount of car for the money
Would you say those are valid reasons?

Totally agree! One of the big reasons I love driving my E39 is the engine...for some reason it just feels so perfect. The perfect amount of torque down low, and lots of power on the highway. Sounds great and performs wonderfully. It's such a happy car!

Best. Transition. Ever. Best new BMW is the M2 Comp. It's a shame they can't make drivers cars like the E39 nowadays. All digital.

Very clever on 6 reason. I remember the GPS and the CD changer with anti-skip technology. Crazy to think this was not so long ago that was height of technology. You didn’t talk about the oval rear view mirror! Classic ///M

Yeah. BEST car ever made... had this 5- Series for 8, 5h years. I loved it. And yes. First thing I did was to buy that same m-tech wheels, cause it’s the most beautiful wheel for this car.

Really great video as always Tedward! Love this car so much!

I also love all that wood trim. The days when a German sports sedan prioritized classic warmth and luxury over racy carbon fiber and aluminum trim.

You don’t have a Mk4 nav computer yet? Dude, get on it. It transforms the entire radio/nav UI speed. Worth it.

The E39 and E46 are probably the best BMWs ever built. They had a really nice balance of luxury and sport. Although people seem to like the driving feel of the F22/23. Many say it feels like an older bimmer. Sadly as for right now BMWs are built to be leased. Instead of owned by the driving enthusiasts who wants a solid GT car.

I drive an E39 2001 ( just a 525i ) and I adore the timeless look on it. Sadly the inside is not leather at all and really doesn't look amazing but the outside is just sexy. I got an amazing model, well kept and a really cool dark grey tone that looks brutal. I love that car.

The E39 design is still good looking today, and it is from a time when BMW designs were distinct while being understated 👍
I am driving a 20 year old hydro pneumatic Citroën and am a huge fan of the french quirkinesses, so normally I am not into BMW, but when I borrowed an unspoiled grandpa-spec 523i automatic for a day I must admit I felt a nice connection to that car that I didn’t expect 😃👍
