Repairing Skin Barrier. What is the moisture barrier of skin?

The skin barrier, also sometimes referred to as the “moisture barrier” or the “acid mantle”. Is responsible to keep bad things like irritants out of your skin and good things like hydration in. But what about when your skin barrier becomes compromised or damaged.

Healthy Skin Barrier. How to fix a damaged skin barrier.

You got three major skin cells you're dealing with. Keratinocytes, which are your main skin cell that gives you those natural oils, ceramides, and cholesterols being the glue for your skin. Melanocytes, which produce melanin and give the skin its tone, and Langerhans cells, which provide immune protection against germs. You need these 3 cells to work effectively at all times to keep a functioning skin barrier possible. Because just as it is important to keep pollutants out of the skin, the skin barrier also helps to hold onto natural moisture by preventing TEWL.

Signs of a damaged skin barrier.

Dehydrated and dry skin. If you have chronic skin irritation, your rosacea and eczema isn't controlled, or if your skin constantly itches, or if you have delayed wound healing. Other signs can be rough patches along the skin, and a big one is if you experience stinging when you are applying your products, especially those that are tailored for sensitive skin.

How often to exfoliate for skin barrier.

Exfoliate gently. two to three times per week — as long as your skin can handle it is a good step. A classic mistake is exfoliating everyday and overusing those exfoliating acids.

Does sleep affect the skin?

Sleep quality is just as important as sleep quantity. 7-8 hours a night is great and all, but are they quality hours?

Cleanser damaged my skin barrier. Best cleanser for damaged skin barrier.

Some cleansers strip the skin barrier of its natural oils. You want to use a gentle cleanser and massage it using lukewarm water and rinse it off. Never with hot water. Another big contributor are environmental factors like smoke, pollution, and uv radiation. Try your best to Apply sunscreen every day and remember to Reapply every two hours, or more if swimming or sweating.

Does smoking affect the skin. How to repair moisture barrier.

In fact UV radiation and smoking has this synergistic effect that you should know of.

How to repair skin barrier function.

1.) Pay attention to pH. When healthy, the skin's natural pH is between 4.5 and 5.5. Most soaps and cleansers have a higher pH, are more alkaline and can strip the natural oils from your skin, so while you're in the repair process, opt only for products that are best for sensitive skin and have a pH that is close to your own skin.

2.) Use a multi faceted moisturizer. Some of the best moisturizers have a combination of emollients and humectants. But speaking of humectants like hyaluronic acid, if you live in an area with low humidity (30% or less) the hyaluronic acid will draw moisture from your skin, leading to dryness.

3.) Lastly third tip to repair the skin barrier is take care of yourself. Afterall, your skin is the largest organ on your body. What you eat, how much quality of sleep you get, and how you handle stress have an impact on your skin. So in the meantime, find ways to help you control your stress, even if its 30 minutes of exercise a day, tending to your spirituality, taking care of a pet, journaling, and trying out forest bathing.

I realized I had been exfoliating way too much using different products when I cleansed my face one evening and put on the most mild moisturizer imaginable: the aveeno oat gel moisturizer “calm and restore” and it burned like 🔥 on my face. Red cheeks and tight skin also. Stopped all my exfoliating acids and retinoid. Will be moisturizing my skin back to health for the next couple weeks.

Dr. Aspires, when i look in the mirror up close, i see what appears to be a lot of very fine "cracks" in my skin, particuarly on my cheeks and my forehead. They dont seem to be fine lines. But is this a sign of an impaired moisture barrier? I dont have dry skin at baseline. In fact, my skin is combination and currently quite congested. Ive been stuck in a cycle where ive been irritating my skin with products and slathering on thick creams.

Also, thank you for teaching us about how the skin works. YouTube singlehandedly destroyed my skin, because i was running out to buy whatever a influencer was promoting. Now im sticking to a routine of using a gentle cleanser and a simple moisturiser. The Cicaplast Baume B5 has helped my skin immensely.

Thank you so much for this video! I was hoping to ask a quick question. The only sign of a damaged skin barrier in my case is that my moisturizer and very mild exfoliant cause a mild burning on my nose that lasts for about 30 seconds. I have no inflammation, dryness, peeling, bad acne, etc. And all of my products are indeed for sensitive skin.

I had a mild case of perioral dermatitis, and have been using metronidazole cream 0.75% for about 6 weeks. I stopped using hot water to cleanse my face, and the stinging from the products improved a fair amount, but it's still there. What does this sound like to you? Again, my skin mostly looks very healthy and I don't have any of the common symptoms of a damaged barrier except my products briefly stinging a bit!

Thank you!

I was using the ordinary HA no problem. Recently went all fancy and got Maelove HA B5 and added some to my routine and my neck and chest are on fire, red, swollen and itchy. 🤦‍♀️ can this be too much HA? And how to fix it. Definitely going to take a break. I definitely do not have sensitive skin

I do have all the CosRx products maybe I’ll try that tonight

I would like to ask, does the skin in sensitive parts such as the lips and genitals have a natural skin turnover cycle like skin elsewhere?

What do you use if the skin barrier is bad from using a scrub on your arms and legs? My arms and legs feel like a coating of black pepper.
