Looking back on my journey to teach myself to code, I made a lot of mistakes. These mistakes led to a great deal of wasted time that could have been prevented. In today's video I wanted to share my three biggest regrets I had when I was learning to code.

Have you made any of these mistakes on your journey learning to code?

1- FOCUS MORE ON QUALITY INSTEAD OF THE QUANTITY OF HOURS.
2- FOCUS MORE ON PRACTICE.
3- FIND A COMMUNITYTO GET HELPED IF YOU ARE STUCK.

Anders Ericsson and Robert Pool wrote a very good book about the importance of deliberate practice. It's called "Peak: Secrets from the New Science of Expertise" and it goes into detail about quality vs. quantity when it comes to studying or training for something. A very helpful read. 😊

You make a really good point at tip no. 1. In programming, we don't have the luxury of handwaving. Can't say to the compiler 'You know what I mean'. In other industries, you can probably get away with a little bit of that. 15 minutes with Lazer focus is worth hooours of studying where your focus is broken every other minute.

Very nice tips Andy! the three points (hustle, projects/practice/theory and community) you mentioned are quite intuitive also but when one hear it from the the professional developers it make even more sense. Thank you!

Thanks for all your supportive and helpful content, Andy. At the very least it's just nice to have a sharp and wise mind to interact with and a community to share thoughts and ideas with. Peace man

I agree with you 100%. I am practicing with speed reading application on my mobile, and I've noticed that my results in its exercises could be many times better or worse depending on my current focus.

I am 200% Agree on all 3 point, because exactly same points/difficulty I am facing in my first 3 to 4 year while i was learning to code and doing job. Most of the time i need to spend lots of time in motivating my self to continue to work as self taught programmer.

Your second point of waiting to learn everything before you start coding described me. When I finally decided to learn by actually creating an app was when everything started clicking.

"Don't watch YouTube while learning".

How did you predict what I was doing at this exact moment?.... WIIITCCHHHH!!!!

I think something else worth mentioning is... emphasis on learning concepts over syntax...with learning syntax..coding becomes almost impossible.. Google and stack overflow can always help out once the concept is properly understood..

Great advices. From my experience I would suggest using a stopwatch. If you go to the toilet or kitchen to make a drink - press stop. Let the stopwatch be running only when you learn. You will know exactly how much time you really spend on studying.

Good video. I've been learning for about 3 months now and I've been afraid to start my first project. I'll take your advice and start now while I'm leaning. Thanks.

I have an idea ofa shipping track app: an mobile app to get notification with updates of your shipping. There are many couriers in my country that currently have no mobile tracking available. But a few days ago when I tried to start working on it I just break my head to a HUGE wall: I know a lot about about mostrly front-end developing but for this app I would need mostrly backend development for an API. So that's when I realize I still have a lot to learn. I know what most people say: create a most simple app. No f*cking way. I prefer to build 2 o 3 big full stack proyect rather than 20 shitty projects about this and that, before diving into a big one.
