GO TO OFFICE HOURS. Seriously. Even if you feel like you can muscle through on your own, you want those professors to like you - especially if you plan on going to grad school.

So many times i’ve seen a college student answer this “I didn’t get enough sleep.” Stay up late to get good grades and have a good social life is great, but none of that will be possible if you get a couple hours of sleep every night.

My biggest regret is that I'm shy and antisocial like shit, I can imagine not having any friends from college

Y’all, meeting new people in college and exchanging phone numbers is so big to college success!
I always got someone’s phone number from each of my classes, so that if i missed class i could ask them for notes, and Vice verse.
Its also great for studying to have a study buddy or study group. With a group, you can divide big assignments (unless the teacher prohibits it) and each do a portion of the assignment, then share answers—Because in college, what matters most isn’t whether you got the assignment done, but whether you studied the information on that assignment. So the sooner you get it done, the sooner you can start studying.
And best of all, you’ll have people to eat lunch with and possibly stay up late studying with (if you Want that), because life in college can definitely get repetitive and depressing—it helps to have people around you who are in it with you.

As an actual college student, I’ll give it to you straight:

1. Don’t skip classes, it becomes a habit very fast. It’s not necessarily about being there to learn the material, it’s about being in a work mindset during your day.

2. Don’t sign up for morning classes unless you have to. Mainly for the past reason - it’s easier to skip classes; however you don’t learn as well if you are attending a class right after waking up.

3. Read you textbook; the textbook is far more detailed than the lectures and tests are almost always made with textbook material in mind, it’s vital to understanding the course.

4. Do homework and reading when you can, not when you ‘want’ to; I’m not saying you can’t have off time, but don’t procrastinate(this is coming from a procrastinator).

5. Study in public; studying in public creates a sense of pressure to do work, rather than by yourself, where you can let you mind wander or you can be distracted by your phone or else.

6. Be social; it’s really easy to get too deep into work and lazing around, however, this kills your mental health and slowly degrades your work ethic. Even if you are an extreme introvert, do something to get out and talk to other people.

7. Have a degree plan; your counselors are great, but they have a lot of students to worry about, so make sure you have a rough idea of what classes you need to take and when so you can get you major(s)/minor(s) in your desired time frame.

8. Lastly, keep up with your family(if you have a good relationship with them), as it’s refreshing to talk with from home every once and a while. If you have any issues, let them know, so that you can sort them out fast before it snowballs into a bigger problem.

I know this advice seems overly-organized or stereotypical, but it’s stereotypical for a reason. I struggled because I didn’t take most of these seriously my freshman year and suffered because of it. College isn’t a trial by fire unless you make it one, so good luck and make wise choices.

My biggest regret is: I didn’t give up.

The school I chose was terrible, but transferring in my field of study means starting over. I didn’t want to pay for extra semesters.

Well, now I’m $80k in debt and was kicked out for being disabled and needing accommodations. No degree. No money. No time to fix it, just enough to find a 9-5. I hate the education system.

Actually, the best advice for new college students is to not overthink it. Don't stress out about getting it all right or watch a bunch of YouTube videos trying to be totally over prepared. You're gonna be fine. Just go to college. Otherwise you'll stress yourself out over whether or not you're spending your college experience correctly, have a breakdown, and have to drop out.

I still have less than a year left to graduate from college and I've made 0 genuine friends. I spend all my day either in classes, eating alone, or studying. The "college experience" was shit for me but hey I at least I have a good gpa and I'm good in the field I'm focusing on

Not a college student but someone told me this, and it's going to those meet up events colleges do. It's surprising how many people don't really know anyone, since everyone's coming from completely different places. So it's definitely worth a shot! Might make a few friends.

I couldn't imagine having the kind of money or actual privilege to waste time and money and not go to class.

i didnt have the college experience;
managing life on a budget while working and studying is difficult. planning out your meals, comparing supermarket prices, house chores... and getting ready for interviews - was hellish.. no time for rest at all.

i did learn alot and i dont regeret having to work so hard for a degree but i wont lie and say i had fun... i didnt - it was hard, it was a constant struggle everyday and you have to overcome the difficulties everytime or you will just sink.

This is my personal opinion and advice of one of my professors. As a freshman in college, especially if you're new to the city, you need to find some stability. You will meet people along the way, it doesn't necessarily mean that you'll have long term relations with those people, but you'll have friends who'll understand the struggle and MAYBE will become close friends later on in college. Clubs are okay, but know that your social interactions don't necessarily depend on them. My field of study requires a lot of daily work and pairing clubs with long study sessions, seminars and foreign language classes would be draining after a while. What I'm trying to say is, find and adapt to a work ethnic in your first year so you can actually have a choice in picking the club which is suited for you.

All of what I've said is meant with a good intention & many may disagree with me and that's ok. All fields and school systems are different after all.

My regret: Not getting any of the “College Experiance”

I had a lot of anxiety issues and didn’t really know how to handle it. I spent a majority of my time alone in my apartment, which caused some depression and hurt my grades a lot.

So yeah, you want to try and balance the college experience and studies to get the best results.

My regret is I spent too much time doing my assignments rather than knowing people. Having connections seems more important than excel in degree nowadays.

My mom is actually a college biology teacher, and she appreciates it when people are willing to ask her questions!!

I think the biggest regret I hear in general is going to college itself. So much debt for a degree that might not even matter much anyway.

As a university student who’s in their last year as an undergraduate at 20 years old, I just regret applying for university in general.

As an introvert I always overthink what might happen if I just walk up to someone and say hi. I then decided to check if my university has clubs and there were none. I'm going to have a hard time making new friends.

My biggest regret about (community) college (before dropping out due to the pandemic and things going to hell) was that I went there with the stereotypical expectations and pressure of the time line which young adults go through in life as shown on TV or in the movies.

Forgetting everything after each semester and vaguely remembering what it was while working at my dream job. Glad they taught us what we needed to know at my workplace but hands on experience will trump smashing your head against a desk in grief no doubt
