Prevent acne while living large 💪🏼
.
Did you know that consuming too much protein powder can lead to acne breakouts?
This is because the high levels of whey protein in many powders can increase glucose levels, leading to an increase in oil production and clogged pores.
.
What is causing my acne?
There are many factors that contribute to the formation of acne. In short-

Genetics (sensitive oil gland)
Foods (hence the anti-acne diet)
Hormones (hence anti-hormonal medicines)
Stress, wrong skin care & others
.
I do not need to investigate the cause of acne in *most* cases.
.
An important concept to understand is that in most cases, hormonal levels are normal. It is your sebaceous glands that are sensitive.

I've struggled with acne most of my life and completely agree with Dr. Lim regarding these diet tips : )
aka less processed foods, less sugar and processed carbs, limit dairy, etc.
It won't solve everything for everybody, and sometimes if it's more severe, you will need an intervention with medication.
IMO my condition also improves when I get great quality sleep every day, reduce stress levels, have clean sheets, tie hair back during sleep, and my routine of topical creams on track (prescription benzaclin and tretinoin for infection, aloe vera for inflammation, moisturizer and sunscreen, maybe some niacinamide or zinc, and a prn treatment of Ordinary's lactic acid for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, etc, but don't overkill it - keep it light and simple).
Good luck everyone : >

I have sensitive acne prone skin. No for dairy me, or else I get cystic acne (hard painful bumps). Chips, oreos & too much meat break me out as well, or it changes my skin texture (pores will look bigger, too).

I'm primarily plant based. Chicken or seafood 2-3x per week. And I take a probiotic. Also, my skin loves when I drink celery juice or eat fresh papaya. Gives it a really nice glow.

Learn your skin triggers then adjust accordingly.

Thank you for this! I started working out in January & my previously dormant acne flared up & has been such a pain since! I’ve been trying to figure out what I can do & this is definitely helpful for me to change a couple things you mentioned. Thank you!

My acne was starting to get better but then after going to the gym for a while I have acne all over my chin again. I tried so many things that didn't work but maybe it's the whey protein. I'm trying it last because I don't want to give up the whey protein shakes as I'm a student it's one of the few protein sources I can afford.

This makes a lot fo sense. Started working out again and I kept getting outbreaks, thinking it might be due to the sweat, I showered more. But that didn't fix the issue, I started thinking maybe I overwashed which compromised my skin barrier. Turns out, it's the protein source and probably the natural the test. spike from working out too.
Want a better looking body or face? Hmm...

I found soon as I changed milk in my coffee to a tablespoon of cream, my skin has improved. I enjoy my cheese and yoghurt. Low carbon, low sugar and high protein is my diet.

Oat milk is high glycemic index, so not a good suggestion for acne-prone folks in my view. Almond milk should be a better choice for most.

That is great information and I wished I had known about whey protein earlier before I just bought 2 more tubs.. guess I'll have to rough it out but very silly of me to not even look at the ingredients which clearly say "contains milk"

WORST thing to drink is flavoured milk or iced coffees, especially if they contain protein powder = milk + high sugar content!!!

Would milk substitutes not count as highly processed foods? I assume most people are buying these at the grocery store and not making it themselves.

What about Whey Isolate proteins? People who are lactose intolerant are able to take Whey Isolates if they can't with regular whey protein. It also has less fat and carbs usually, so would it affect your IGF?
