iPad or Pen Display - what's best for drawing? Let's find out! \OwO/
For beginners and experienced artists the answer might be different, so let's look closer to each device (¬ω¬)

In this video I use iPad 2018 and Huion Kamvas 13 as these are the tablets I use on everyday basis for work and fun :3

Also, both Portraits in the video I draw on the same black and white base, which I've made in advance, as main style differences are usually mostly in the finalization phase ^w^

I've watched a half dozen video comparing ipad and drawing monitors and you're the first to mention the difference in the amount of layers possible with high resolution works. This makes a lot of difference for me! Thank you :)

With clip studio paint, you can easily do 300+ layers on iPad. I made some drawings with 300+ layers and timelapse record on

I started on an iPad Air and it was great, but I soon got tired of having to transfer my work to the computer using the cloud. And then I'd notice that I missed something, or that I could make it better, so back to the iPad, makes changes, transfer again. Plus, the app I use - Affinity Designer - has some real issues on the iPad.

I finally broke down and tried to learn how to use a pen display and now that I've gotten used to it, I won't go back to using the iPad. It's just nice, having access to the working file, less shuffling about, using an app with all the features working. And I LOVE the felt nips.

One suggestion, though, concerning desk space. I use a Kamvas 16 and I've attached it to a swingable VESA arm using a metal clipboard, a piece of thin plywood, a few bolts, and a whole lot of Command Strip velcro, so I can pull it off. It puts the display up with my main display and I use it always as a second monitor. And when I need to draw, I just swing the pen display out on the arm where it hovers over my mouse & keyboard, nearly vertical and at eye level, so I don't suffer any neck or back strain at all. I also have enough room on the rig to attach a Huion KD100 shortcut keyboard right next to the display, because I love that wheel for rotating the canvas.

Anyway, great video. Now that I've found you, I'm going to watch some more.

Yay! The Kamvas 13! What I'm using with Photoshop. The cables... I have an older PC - no USB type C port. So no clean, one cable connection. Using that 'octopus' cable instead. But definitely a good buy! Happy that I followed the link from your review of the Huion Kamvas 13.

I used both interchangeably, iPad air for brainstorming and cintiq 16 for complex 100+ layers final works.
But the most efficient way is still traditional table without screen because its doesn't generate neck and back pain like iPad or cintiq did,
for the long-term i definitely suggest traditional tablet for health priority.

But you can get longterm comfy using pen display by installing vesa/ergotron, although they're quite expensive and only suitable for really big display like 22inch, you can mod a 16 inch on it, but it's not the best option for arm-rest.

I’ve loved drawing on my iPad pro, it’s what got me fully into digital art, especially back when Wacom was the only well known brand for display tablets and they cost just as much as the ipad does (my laptop had died so went with the iPad to save money overall) but Huion do much more affordable options now so looking at getting one of their Display tablets as i can no longer draw on my ipad without it being plugged in the whole time and quite frankly having to spend another 1k on an ipad makes me want to cry 😂

Literally my dilemma at this moment! Thank you for sharing your experience. Loved your art, and make up too! :)

I like to use both, my ipad 9th gen is great for portability and the amount of layers I need for my pieces is just enough for me. I don't really like procreate but I do use it because it's better than the other programs on the ipad. Now I use CSP pro and I only use it on my laptop so when I get home to draw my comic pages I go straight to my laptop and chill at my desk.

As a teen, I’m team ipad, it’s really so much more convenient for me (price and space wise) but once I’m older I’d like to buy a display tablet so I can put more details on my art, and just wanna say, thanks for the vid!

Ты такая милая! Прекрасные видео и прекрасная художница. Молодец!

For anyone who's still trying to decide, this is what I did, after obsessing over getting an iPad for more than a month (was thinking about it before as well but I was waiting for Black Friday). The iPad is awesome, especially if you pair it with Porcreate. But as Ana mentioned, there is a limitation on the resolution and the layers. Only an iPad Pro can handle a resolution suitable for printing while permitting enough layers. An iPad Pro though costs a small fortune, especially outside the US. She recommended something really cool, which is also what I'm planning to do. Instead of getting the best iPad, go for the Kamvas plus the iPad 9 with the 1st gen pencil. It will cost as much as getting an iPad Air 64 GB. With the iPad it takes a lot more effort to move things around and be careful about the storage and still not get high enough resolution or layers. Just ordered my Kamvas 13, hope I'll put it to good use!

Ran across you Huion 13 2.5K review and LOVE your art!! I have a basic Ipad like this and really do love it, BUT the layers is a huge problem. This is why I started looking again at these tablet displays. I'm kind of a beginner, but the things I want to work on need to be really big and I can barely get 2 layers at times. I think the idea of having both is spot on. Subbed by the way so I can watch you draw!!

Clicked on this video since I was thinking swapping my screenless tablet to something where I can draw on a screen. And immediately sold on the one where the amount of layers are not limited. Even if my drawing style is on the simpler side, I use a LOT of layers (sometimes reaching up to 300+ if it's for a commission with a background and/or multiple characters.😅) Thank you for this vid!

I learned it's possible to use an ipad as extra monitor for your pc! So you can open photoshop or csp on your computer and use it on your ipad

I have both. I like ipad for sketching and just coming with ideas. For the real client work and best possible outcome going through lots of references is crucial so for professional work I only use my workstation.

Hi! Thank you for that video!
I personally use a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 lite for drawing, that cost me, in promotion, 400€ or a bit less...S-Pen and the cover include.
I've had it for over a year now, at first I loved it. I'm using the app IbisPaint, but there are other really good apps around apparently, it's just a question of preference. I had been using IbisPaint X for years on my phone, doing edits on it so it was just way easier for me to keep going with the same app.

Now.. eh. I'm glad I have it, I think it is a wonderful tablet, especially for the price you pay it. But I feel stuck with it now, Android doesn't have the same level of fluidity as iOS, it is a bit too small for me (10.4"), and.. the app, omfg. It gives me anger bursts, I could move to another one but no, I tried many, didn't like them.. so I'll stick with it, knowing that sometimes it lags like crazy. Honestly it might be my tablet's fault, in any case it's really frustrating.
The battery also is an issue for me, it doesn't last long.. and it's very annoying!

I think that tablet is perfect if you have a restricted budget, if you move a lot or don't have a computer, want to carry the tablet easily.. and wanna try digital art. Or if it's for a kid for example! In these cases, it'll be amazing and you won't find easily a tablet that can compete both its price and quality. It's also regularly in promotion, and available in 3 colors... 2 if you're in France like me, pink is unailable I don't know why ;-;

If you're already into digital art and you like it tho, if you know it's this way you wanna improve your art.. I wouldn't recommand it. You will get frustrated quickly I think. I would tell you to either save up to buy a graphic tablet+computer if you don't have one already, or save up to buy at least an iPad Air (4th gen minimum).. from what I saw it is great for artists and still cheaper than the iPad Pro. Personally the only thing that would convince me to buy a pro instead of an air is the size.. the ipad pro 12.9" must be so comfortable to draw on. But the price... dear lord 😭

Here, I'm done writing my novel :D
PS: that makeup is GORGEOUS. I'm in love with it 🤩
