What I really like about your channel is that your workshop is probably like most of us have, with the same basic tools, and yet you can make most projects that the big shops with fancy and expensive tools and machines make.

For this size tray I like to use 1 inch rebar to reenforce the joints. Then I thread the end and cap it off with a titanium nut that I tig weld on the end to the rebar to be sure it doesn’t loosen up from all the ice teas and mint juleps I’ll be serving from it. You’d be shocked and amazed to learn how much destructive vibration the ice cubes in cold drinks can produce by just carrying them out to the veranda and setting them on your tasteful glass table with concrete block legs…

I've done something similar to bird boxes I made. Wanted to keep screws out of it, keep them as biogradeable as possible. Screwed them together using wood glue on the joints, screws held wood together. When dry, removed screws, drilled holes out, inserted glue, drove in dowels, when dry cut the dowels down level with a chisel.

Will this work on old people with bad joints? There are a few I know that could use that help.

One little extra step I prefer to do is to make a little lengthwise cut in the dowel (the flush cut saw is fine for this) to allow air to escape as you drive the dowel in.

If it's glued well, are the dowels necessary for strength? Or just for the look?

Dowel are nice. No metal in the wood. A pure wooden item.

I often use Miller Dowels to help strengthen joints.

One twist to this. Use a screw while building and gluing, then remove the screw and replace with dowel pins.

So Steve, is the point of reinforcing the joint to give a mechanical bond in addition to the purely adhesive one? If not, I don't think I'm getting your point.
