5 Minute Fix - True Altitude

In this 5 Minute Fix I’m tackling True Altitude. True Altitude questions come up across a few of the ATPL subjects, so in this video I'll show you the basics about why True Altitude exists, then show you a framework from which you can answer True Altitude exam questions.

I've already covered altimetry in a much more detailed series, but I know you don't always have the time (or inclination) to watch a length video when you're just trying to answer an exam question. Exam questions will do their best to trip you up, and the longer series goes into more detail about how to apply the method to tricky questions - so check that out for more help!

As ever, I'd really appreciate your feedback! Let me know future video ideas, or subject areas you're struggling with - and give this a thumbs up if you find it helpful, and subscribe if you're not already.

Thanks. Good luck.

Thank you so much! You helped ma a lot with my issues for the true altitude calculations. And now I can simply convert and reverse the caluclations to get my minimum flight level (Pressure altitude).

Great video. I like the idea of your 5-minute fixes, but I don't think your viewers would mind even if you make them 10-minute fixes instead, that way the videos would be easier to follow and you wouldn't have to rush through things too fast. Either way, I think your videos are very helpful for anyone studying for the ATPL. Thanks!

On stage 1; Did you get 30, because of the temperature drop at 2 deg up to FL150?

Great explanation as always!

Good help, but what’s happened if the temperature deviation is negative ? For your first formula that give us wrong result

Really great video and perfect to understand. Unfortunately I can't find the link to download the drawing. Can you please help me with that?

Hello, may I ask? Why does the airport altitude matter in method 1? If the airport had been at 2000ft I would have got a different true altitude. Thank you very much

Your Method 1 is wrong and may lead to very dangerous mistakes. The Method 2 takes in account decreasing between isobars starting from see level which makes absolute sense from physics perspective. Why would you calculate correction based on “H. A. S.”?! What kind of physics is behind that? Can you explain? At such small elevation it’s already 5% deference between results. But let’s say we at high terrain airport. Airport elevation 3000’ and ISA-30’. You will correct MDH200’ by +24’ according to your Method 1 and if you will go to that “corrected” minimum in IMC, you will find yourself 160’ below the ground because the correction using Method 2 is 384’. Or I got it wrong ?

In method 2 of TEC you are using the Indicated Altitude instead of H.A.S. and therefore you don't get the same answer.
