Anxiety is NOT a 'mental illness'

Why is anxiety often labelled a mental illness? In my view this label can be misleading and hold people back from recovery.

In this view I explain how anxiety is more physical and mental and is ultimately a learned habit, entirely predictable after a sufferer endures long periods of stress.

I can’t tell you how much this resonated with me because I myself was viewing my anxiety as an illness, and this insight changes everything. Thank you so much ❤

I agree we are not broken. We have an extra sensitized nervous system, and that's it really. I must admit before I found Dr. Claire Weekes decades ago, when I first experienced anxiety, I was sure I had a mental issue, that would require a padded cell sooner or later. Thanks to dr, Claire (TG for her!) I learned that it was not. Thank you for doing the work you are doing. 🌟

I think depression also gets treated a similar way, but worse. People are told by the media and society in general that depression is "extremely dangerous" and incurable or permanent and that they need medication for it. Nobody is told that the habit of rumination is what fuels depression, as well as high cortisol levels.

I think that because of the way depression is portrayed by the media, authorities and government, people honestly believe that there's no way to recover.

For some reason, no one here talks about cortisol levels (or I just didn't see them). We learn to relax our body, that is, to calm it down and let it know that there is no danger. But anxiety doesn't go away. And it takes a lot of time. Poor sleep, poor nutrition, being overweight, inability to properly experience emotions and respond to stress, etc. lead to increased cortisol levels and activate adrenaline.

That is, we fight the consequences again and again, but we don't look for the cause. We don't know the structure of our brain and body. I don't agree that anxiety has tormented me for many years.

Relaxing the body means giving the brain a command that I am safe. That is, deceiving the brain. But I am not ready to deceive myself. I tried to put myself in conditions where I need to survive. Such artificial conditions activate many instincts in the body, but then the body copes more easily with daily background stresses. In survival situations, you need to maintain a cool head and human qualities. It's a difficult mix, but it forces you to struggle with your injuries, your daily routine, your emotions, and you realize that you can't just relax your body if your head is in chaos.

If anxiety is not a brain problem, how is the body supposed to deal with it on its own?

If we relax the body but don't clear the brain of thoughts, then the physical relaxation phase will only temporarily stop the anxiety. Is it possible to solve the problem once and for all: to let the brain control the body, and not the body control the mind?

In the USA, defining Anxiety as a disease was done on purpose. Pharma rules here and the younger they get them the better. We are in serious trouble in the US.

Love your presentations. Thank you 🙏🏻

While I’m nervous I’m super socially anxious. I feel like everyone is watching every move I make and judging me. Is this part of a sensitized nervous system? It’s awful…

What I struggle with is the doom / terror feeling from the anxiety and scary thoughts. I suppose I that means I added a second thought to the feelings? Currently my thoughts are so fast but I think that’s the accept part that I struggle with as the thoughts go so fast

Samuel is it normal to have had shortness of breath non stop for 6 months straight? My heart races and I literally don’t sleep at all. I keep thinking it’s my thyroid 😢

Besides accepting, allowing, going loose, do you also have to engage in activities, diversions that are highly intellectual diversion, that require a lot of focus in order to fully recover from severely high anxiety? Very strong diversions?
