Why sanctions won't stop Russia | Business Beyond

It’s almost two years since Russia invaded Ukraine and the war is not ending anytime soon. The Ukrainian counter-offensive of 2023 has not brought the gains the country’s leaders and western backers hoped for. The pressure is on both the US and EU to keep providing Ukraine with the military and financial support it needs.

Meanwhile Vladimir Putin looks more confident than ever. This time last year, western powers introduced an oil price cap aimed at seriously denting the Kremlin’s capacity to earn revenue from its oil exports. It worked for a few months but Russia has found ways around it. Meanwhile, its economy continues to function reasonably well, despite the range of sanctions levelled at it.

In this episode of Business Beyond, we ask if there are economic scenarios that could force Russia to the negotiating table. Or if the Kremlin simply has enough financial firepower to keep going - however long it takes.

What the commentators failed to mention is that Europe is still buying oil and gas from Russia indirectly. For example, India buys Russian crude oil, refines it and resell it to Europe at a substantial profit. China gets more gas piped in from Russia, thereby reducing its need for LNG form the U.S. and reassigns those contracts to Europe at a higher price.
Seems everyone is winning except Europe.

It's not just oil. Russia is not only an energy giant, but also the worlds 2nd largest arms exporter, the top supplier of nuclear reactors, and a rare earths and enriched uraniam producer. The world will always buy these things no matter what the geopolitical climate, and no matter what the cost.

You are forgetting one small fact. Russian government debt for 2023 is about $330 billion US dollars. The total US government debt is 34 trillion US dollars and climbing. Russia paid down the previous years debt by over 50 billion. On the other hand, the US has done nothing but increase its debt. This is a big issue. that will eventually haunt us all.

Hypocrisy at its peak. Europe and US buying Russian gas, petroleum products and Uranium not funding the war but India buying Oil funding the war😂

I remember a year ago, many in the west said, price cap will work. One DW News journalist, Konstantine Eggert disagreed by saying "There's so many ways to bypass such sanctions". He was right.

One thing I know for sure is that the Russians can endure suffering a lot longer than most other people.

why does DW always accuse China and India of buying Russian oil and gas? The EU is currently one of the largest exporters of gas and oil from Russia.

Sanctions proved a blessing to Russia. Russia was like that 20 something living in his parent’s basement. Getting by with no ambition. Parents kick him out and 2 years later it was the best thing that could have happened to him. He has become more resourceful and self reliant with a new circle of friends.

Instead of writing In conclusion: why Russia is winning they should write down How Russia is winning the Economic war against the west.

Boomerang sanctions not only weakened the EU economy, but strengthened the competing economies of China and India. 😂
