Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back - Darth Vader talks to The Emperor

Darth Vader and Darth Sidious (The Emperor) discuss the threat that Luke Skywalker could become to their power.

I realise that to have said that too early in the film would have ruined the big reveal. Is there some in-universe reason for Palpatine to refer to Luke's father as Anakin? Some kind of psychological game that Palpatine is playing with Vader, perhaps?

I like that in this scene. When Palpatine and Vader were talking about converting Luke to the dark side, you can tell just in their tone that they were planning to use Luke by their side to kill and replace the other.

Oh oh! It was Thrawn that told at Palpatine about Luke and Leia's existence finding out that they are actually Anakin's children

Clive Revill originally voiced Palpatine with an unknown woman as a stand-in.

For the 2004 DVD release, Ian McDiarmid replaced both a stand-in and Revill's voice.

Having all those Star Destroyers in an asteroid field to go after one ship seems such a waste.

Darth Vader: “He will join us or die, Master.”

It makes sense to have the same actor replace Clive Revill here especially since that Emperor was not that compelling.

However, if I had to do this scene, I would have hidden his face so his appearance on ROTJ would be the first time you see his it.

If you really think about this scene, this is the full height of Palpatine's cruelty. From the moment Anakin became the true Darth Vader we all know, Palpatine fuelled his hate with the lie that Padme died, and her unborn child along with her, that everything Anakin had was dead, by his own hand. But now, he _chooses_ to reveal that Luke is his son, and when Vader questions how this could possibly be, given what Palpatine told him from the start, all Palpatine says is, "Search your feelings, you know it to be true." He knows that _Vader_ knows he lied. And he doesn't care anymore. The _way_ he says it...he sounds unbothered by Vader's question...annoyed. Palpatine has grown tired of Vader and his baggage.

What Palpatine is literally saying to him here is: "Yes, I lied. I told you you killed Padme, and you believed it like a fool. Because that's what you are. I don't care about you, and I never did."

And the saddest thing is...Vader is too broken to even care anymore.

Vader took this remarkably well.
I get that they couldn’t spoil the whole reveal by getting him too worked up, but more emotion wouldn’t have been amiss if Vader WASN’T Anakin. We would assume he was mad that the Skywalker line wasn’t dead yet. That’s my one critique with this scene.

Move the ship out of the asteroid field so that we can send a clear transmission.
