Millennium Falcon Asteroid Field Scene - The Empire Strikes Back 1980 (1080p)

One of the most breathtaking scenes from The Empire Strikes Back. When watching the special effects of this clip remember that Empire was released in 1980.

This is 36 years before The Force Awakens was released. When i saw this at the cinema for the first time i was just 9 years old (yes i am old now)

The special effects in The Empire Strikes Back were truly groundbreaking and a huge step forward from the already awesome effects from a New Hope in 1977.

Seeing these effects for the first time was an experience you can't explain. It was like we had all gone in a time machine and 20 years into the future. I have yet to see a film that blew me away like this when i saw it for the first time.

Some of the best 3 minutes and 54 seconds of music in film history!

It
1. Creates tension
2. Has comedy
3. Shows how badass Han is
4. Sets up Leia and Han’s relationship
5. Has some of the best music
6. Shows how much the empire wants them
And probably more that I’ve missed
All in the space of about 4 minutes

You have to admit. The Tie Pilots following them had balls of steel.

"we can still outmaneuver em!" I love the straight down nose dive. Love it

C-3P0 screaming and losing his shit as Han is flying through the asteroid field kills me every time. 😂

0:27 is SUCH an underrated moment in Star Wars. That nose dive is badass and FINALLY someone utilizes that THEYRE IN SPACE AND CAN FLY ALONG THE Y-AXIS RATHER THAN STAYING PARALLEL TO OTHER SHIPS

For a movie released nearly 40 years ago.... sick!

I think what I love most about this scene is that it shows us, rather than tells us, how Han is one of the greatest pilots in the galaxy, how he has managed to stay alive for so long despite everyone wanting him dead, and how incredibly badass the Millenium Falcon is.

Han's reactions to the changing situation are amazing and immediate. He doesn't hesitate to make a difficult choice if the other options are even worse. Can't jump to Lightspeed? Sucker the Star Destroyers into running into each other and evade. Can't repair the hyperdrive fast enough AND running into the edge of an asteroid field with a bunch of TIE fighters on your ass? Han immediately tells Chewie to set a course deeper into the asteroid field, because they will definitely die if they stay out in the open with the TIE fighters and Star Destroyers. Later in the movie when they leave the asteroid field, the Lightspeed jump again fails and once again the Falcon is running from a Star Destroyer. The rear deflector screens go down and Han immediately puts all power to the forward shields, turns the Falcon, and makes an attack run on a Star Destroyer. Why? Because anything else would be death, so even something as unlikely as running head to head with a Star Destroyer has better odds than just running and getting blown apart a few seconds later.

Han Solo is a fucking badass, one of the best pilots in the galaxy, at the helm of probably the most heavily modified ship in the galaxy that he can literally pilot through an asteroid field, and Rey is gonna show him shit about the Falcon that he didn't know? Fuck RIGHT OFF!

For all the millions that have been spent making Star Wars movies since The Empire Strikes Back no scene has been all to match the greatness of this one.

Man, everything about this movie is perfect.

This scene is almost 40 years old and it is still better than 99% of the current generation of action scenes.

If I can use “Never tell me the odds” in my life I will die so happy.

This is what comes to mind when I think of the original trilogy.

I love how the music just ratchets up when they get to the asteroid field. You can feel the adventure, the fun and the danger. Amazing music that perfectly fits the scene

Think about it: Chronologically, this is the first time we really saw what the Falcon can actually do. Sure, the ship had a big presence in the original, but there were no maneuvers anything like THIS in that movie. Here, it's being allowed to show off, and does a beautiful job.

Han: “Check the deflector shields”
Chewie: “They’re fucked”
Han: “Great, we can still outmanoeuvre”

I choose to believe that’s what Chewie actually says.

Theres not a single thing in this scene that is off. Nothing. Not one single thing. This is the closest thing to perfection in movie history and still is to this day.

This is without question a perfect movie. I’ve seen this movie probably 100 times and I can never find a single thing wrong with it. An amazing piece of cinematic history. It’s a masterpiece.
