I wanted a federal job because I'm patriotic and my college major is Political Science, I also feel that there is job security and more benefits. Unfortunately i couldn't join the military for medical reasons, but I'm happy where I am in the DOJ and aspire to grow every day. Thank you for your service Armand!!! 🇺🇸

What about pension, carry same private healthcare insurance into retirement, all holidays off, unlimited sick time accrual and 240 leave rollover, leave bank, employee protections like unions, required work life balance and opm rules. Don't waste your time with private sector jobs.

I think that job seekers should look into both options and go for what is best for their lifestyle.

I am in the federal hiring process now (pending a TJO right now anytime). I have a cruise (vacation) that has been planned and paid for about 1 year ago for this upcoming year in January 2024. I was trying to avoid switching jobs until after this trip was over with, but I just couldn't pass up this job opportunity with the Federal Government. If I'm hired on (presented a final job offer) before January 2024, how do I present this vacation that I already paid for and planned and do not want to miss out on with my family? As stated, I do not have my TJO yet, but I know they are trying to move as fast as they can with the hiring process. (They already told me they want to hire me and am waiting on the TJO). How can I address this vacation I have planned without them hopefully not pulling my TJO? Should I keep my mouth shut until the FJO? Even if that's the case, how do I approach it then? Please reply. Thank you.

Hi Armand, if you transfer from one agency to another into a lateral position with different series same job description (from a 0950 to 0306), with 6mos already in your grade. Do you have to wait another 52 weeks to get your next promotion or does the 6mos count towards your 52 weeks in grade?

The FAANG companies pay more than that. That’s misleading video because the starting salary of FAANG companies is around 160k.

What about military retirees? You can’t collect 2 retirements from government anymore so is contracting better because they offer more money?

Government SHOULD be better work life balance so that one who works at any level gives quality. I can attest that this is not the case when one is a federally contracted state government worker. It still has the element of a for profit, ruthless organization.

Private sector, unless you are executive, would you have anything comparable to due process and job security. You may get paid a little bit more; however, that is where it ends.

You tell me when I had it better

Private employer I had: 120 all at once paid leave at the beginning of every year, 401k match where they matched half of what I put in up to 5% of my salary, 6 federal holidays, double the premium on health insurance and $3k deductible, at will employment, birthday day off (which some may think was a bonus), 2% bonus, 12.5% raise after probation

State government: 7.5 hours of paid leave every month, 11.5 federal holidays (.5 for Easter, three federal holidays not observed, but given 2 days off for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years to make up for it), pension after serving 5 fiscal years (5.5 years since I started off the fiscal year), half the premium off health insurance and $1k deductible, 13% raise from the county after serving one and a half month (lucked out because legislation was passed the year I was hired), the state just started up again with raises of 5% every year (after 10 years of not having any raises), 6% probation raise, I think due process (not sure)
