We all know the prestige Indians attach to government jobs. Not only IAS and IPS, even low-ranking government jobs are highly coveted by Indians. How is it that even 30 years after liberalization the Indian youth still prefers the government sector over the private sector? We discuss the reasons behind this obsession which is more complicated than you might think. But even more importantly, we dissect the consequences of this fascination Indians have with government jobs, and show that it's not only harmful for the aspirants, but for the country as well. Wondering how? Watch the video to find out.

When I visited The Netherlands there is one thing I noticed that people respect each other's job. Everyone greets with a smile. Everyone is helpful. This is a part where India needs to grow, respect each job all are equal

Overhyped occupations of india.
1). Celebrities
2). Politicians
3). Civil services

Cause: people themselves.

Root cause: started since british colonization...hierarchy and nepotism.

Solution: Respect each other occupation. Dont overadmire anyone. Have respect for your own work. Be honest. Be proud. Be kind.

My husband is in police department. Comman man considers police equals to corruption but this is not in most of the cases... his job is literally 24×7. Ppl celebrate festivals with their family but policeman never ever be with their families at festive times. Irony is his own family members think sarkari naukri means "Kuber Ka Khazana".
Most depressed job is of police.

I am a govt employee working as a clerk after preparing for 3 years after my college. I belong to a small town in rajasthan.Every point mentioned here is absolutely correct. I belong to a middle class family where a govt job is given much respect than any other private job. The problem is, we people of small towns don't understand that there are much better carrer opportunities other than a govt job also. But someone needs to educate to these people other options available for getting an employment without having to spend much.

A few lines of my favourite poem by Robert Frost:

"Two roads diverged in the woods,
And I took the one less travelled by.
And that has made all the difference."

Learning a skill is very important in today's world. After 12th, I used to give home tutions then worked in a travel agency for only 3k per month. Then after graduation I learnt a new skill, studied for it and started working as a freelancer in a EduTech company and used to earn upto 30k. Now cleared a SSC examination and I'm going to join one of the government ministries as a Level 7 Officer, a position that requires the same skill. So, my suggestion to the aspirants is that you take the road less travelled by.

My father didn't help me in getting required skills for new age market, just because I couldn't clear MBBS exam. He did same to my brother even after knowing he had given his best and couldn't get a seat just because of corruption. I was deeply disappointed by my father's attitude.
Because of his mentality, I had to struggle for jobs. I used to get low paying jobs in private sector which immensely disheartened me . But I didn't allow him to destroy both my siblings life. By hook or crook, I send my sister to Hyderabad, where she works as Data Analyst. Then I forced my brother to take up CAT exam and get into one of best MBA institutes. Now he is in 1st year and in every interview he thanks me for the same infront of his interviewers. I think I will also get some good job in near future. But I am happy atleast I took stand for my both siblings, Even though my life was not sweet to me.

Mohak, I graduated last year in mathematics honours and then started Prepareing for govt jobs.
The points you put are right but you missed one that is corruption, and delay in procedures. Any exam conducted by institutions like ssc, psc Or upsc( except cse) takes more than 3 years to complete the procedures of giving a job. And in states like mine west Bengal there is huge corruption in the recruitment process, people are willing to pay as high as 25-30 lakh for any govt job.

I live in the us and when I visited Mumbai, I called some house cleaners from urban clap… these guys worked very hard for almost 10 hrs as they were charging us a good 6000 for the service …. We were very happy with their hard work and I tipped them 4000 … the guys were not expecting that … one guy was almost In tears … tipping is very normal in America and these guys went above and beyond and I just felt like rewarding them for it …. This whole episode shook me up as I realized that they are not used to people just treating them nicely and with respect … I hope workers get paid a living wage and their hard work gets acknowledged

I personally feel like credits must be gone to those ex-employees joined in govt jobs in 70's-80's. They got govt, job easily compared to today. But some of them didn't work properly and it ended up with losses and disinvestment of many govt. industries and now when our generation came, many industries are in brink of privatization.

I’m based off the United States, and my father is a neurologist here. A person and his family came to visit California from the subcontinent when they also stopped by our house. Without understanding that “government job” mentality ceases to exist outside the subcontinent, he asked if my dad’s job is “Sarkari.” We just looked at each other as some of us didn’t know what to say or didn’t understand what Sarkari is. Just an average American general physician earns $2, 60, 000 USD a year and no matter what kind of job he/she has, the employer is legally required to pay him/her social security (pension) benefits and medical/dental insurance. Most employers also offer 401K benefits for retirement along with stock options, so when selecting jobs in the USA, we don’t look if it is Sarkari or not, because why should we care about that as all employers have same benefits and regulations but who has the better offer in terms of work hours and pay. I then did my research on why he had that weird question, and I came across these facts from the subcontinent that what a normal job is in the USA is the dream for people outside of it. The employment sector seems so underdeveloped that governments have become a God instead of an employer, which explains the status quo behind getting these jobs. This is unfair for such amazing candidates who probably have so much better to contribute to the society than delivering messages in between two police stations. As an American, I am taught to maximize and capitalize on every situation when I have the skills to offer for it, and I do trust in the roaring future of India and the subcontinent whereby PhD holders will get the due for their skills and participate in the development of their nation.

The problem is also with our education system. We learn concepts, we don't implement them. For example.. maths which is a core subject in every exam is of upto 10th level and generally everyone is a pass 10th pass but still they take coaching bcz in schools they don't teach new concepts.

As an employee in both Private sector and now in Public sector, I can confirm that the main problem in Private sector is Work Pressure from upper level (so called Bosses)... In Public sector there is also ample pressure and now a days staff shortages in every department but still the We try (n.b. try to) to follow the factories act, 1948 i.e. 8 hours of work per day, but in Private if you're a new joinee software developer then the upper management will squeeze your last drop of sweat (HR will do nothing, as many others are in queue, if you don't like it then leave it). But if you look at western countries, there is no fascination for public sector jobs, as private employees get reminder from HR/Management to not to take stress.... If we/our nations private big players take this matter seriously, I think 99.9% of job seeker will go for Pvt. Jobs.... Because, a job seeker gets demotivated by hearing "private sector mein bohot pressure hain" by private job holders, as they are facing the same issues.

In psychology, there's a term called, spotlight effect. People always feel they're being looked at and judged by so called chaar log.
No job is small of disrespectful, untill it's morally and ethically done. But people want to demand and command respect and end up in this vicious cycle of chaar log kya kahenge.
It's High time for parents to understand that there are more than just 7 sectors of respectable work.
