Federal versus private sector IT jobs

My course:

Someone told me that they wanted to quit their government job to work in the exciting world of the private sector. I often get servicemen telling me that they want to get out the military and get in the private sector.

BEFORE YOU GET OUT you need to know this. The private sector is wild. There is no loyalty, it is cut-throat and they can fire you for ANY reason and then just say it was for a legal reason. I am not saying don't do the private sector. I am saying BE PREPARED before you get out of the public sector.

Great advice! I have been a government contractor for 10+ years and it's definitely has it good and bad points. As you stated, it's best to set yourself up for success first and foremost by getting as many of the things that were mentioned. Also, most definitely know your subject matter as best as you can and be very proactive to gain as much knowledge you can on your own...
It can indeed be a cut throat environment...In most cases you won't get much resource support from the company or even the group of team workers you work with if you're in that type of situation. Everyone is pretty much doing their own thing and don't share much information if you have any type of questions or issues. I'm just speaking from my own experiences over the many years so just putting it out there, for its something to be very mindful of....

I'm a federal contractor working in cyber security in the DC area. I believe if you get with a bigger company that does government contracting, you'll have a better opportunity for a safety net should the contract or your position be terminated. These bigger companies usually have their hands in multiple agencies and access to numerous contracts. As for leaving the government all together and working for a private company, certs are important. They expect their employees to really know their craft with little on-the-job training. I also found private companies tend overwork their IT employees. I've found CompTIA certs (such as Security+) are useless unless it's mandated by a particular agency (DOD for example). Stick with vendor certs such as Cisco, AWS, Microsoft, etc. I've only found CompTIA certs beneficial for entry level positions such as help desk.

Great advice on this video. Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm finishing my 20 in govt service to lock in the retirement and benefits, then heading to private sector.

It’s not bad. I think government work is bad in a sense that you just become so fearful about what if you lose your job but losing your job ain’t that bad you just gotta put a few resumes in and you get a vacation and relax, unless you are up to your neck in debt. Also yea companies could fire and say fuck you but guess what, if you don’t like the politics around you or the work is piling up you could also say fuck you.
