I have worked for both. Most of my time was in private sector. For me, private sector i took home more pay but I was more stressed, no work/life balance and my co-workers were just horrible. Now I am in goverment and while this is not every agency obviously, I have great pay overall (the many benefits plus pension we have for government but not as good actual take home pay) I have a great work/life balance and just a more welcoming environment overall. For me, it was worth the take home pay cut to switch from private sector to government.

Thank you very much for the information. I'm currently working at a small Army depot for the help desk. Its a contractor position and I'm the lead. It'll be a year come the end of March. By then I'll have Security+ (taken the coursework but need to take the test) as well as my CCNA (currently working on it). I'm hoping to be able to move into a permanent government position after that. This is great information, I appreciate the insider viewpoint.

I worked both Government and Private sector/ DoD contractor for years. In my own opinion, there's NO WAY in hell I would return to private sector shithole jobs that do not value employees. Do you make more money in private ? Sometimes, depending on what you do but that's subjective however, you may make the extra $15-20, 000 per year but you can easily be fired, let-go, terminated, thrown in the trash, released, dismissed, excused and tossed at any SECOND. In government, unless your outside the agency selling cocaine daily it's extremely tough! to get fired or terminated because of due process rights especially if your agency has a union. The government protects it's civil servants as it should be, I have seen good people who have slaved for companies over 15 years and the company just "tossed" them either because the company didn't want to pay that employee which had medical complications or companies fire right before the employee is vested which means they will not be able to get a pension/retirement. These so called contract worthless jobs do not have your best interest in anything, your just a number. Always remember that YOU ARE JUST A NUMBER IN WHICH YOU ARE REPLACEABLE ANY SECOND.

I work for the federal government did 2 details in IT and currently on my third working as a Network Engineer 👩🏾‍💻. Luckily we’ve updated our equipment lol 😂. I love IT hoping this detail makes me permanent in that dept. I’ve had great management and you’re definitely not lying in this video 🤣🤣 . But one thing I did notice most ppl in IT with the government don’t have any certs

True on all points. We had this military girl who called a UPS an "ups" lol. Also the Network Trace vs Trace Route thing. I worked at an MSP, local government and now private sector as well pros and cons to all.

Great info - I had not really considered the differences before. I work for a DoD contractor company in a NON - IT role with a clearance. I have A+ and Google IT support professional certs so far, I start WGU (cloud computing BS degree) 1st of next month.

It's all starting to make sense now, as I've looked at people's education, and scratched my head thinking how in the hell is this person holding that position without all of the certs, etc.

I just switched from private sector to public sector hvac. The public sector definitely has better work life balance and better benefits.

Very insightful I have always worked for municipal government and I can’t see myself working for a private sector job I hope and pray that I can retire with the public sector

All Facts. There are always pros and cons to government regarding IT. As a IS consultant, government is the way to go. Its too good. We have our own culture when it comes to government.

I have worked either public sector, publicly funded, or co-op organizations (all very similar)for my entire career. I have always wondered what private sector would be like. Thanks for the comparison!

My experience is different: I worked with the private sector in the past and they did not want to spend money on new equipment. It was challenging and I was doing the work of 4 people. Working with the government I have more money to buy better equipment and training. I work less and we have more people to do the work.
