But what do you do when you have to travel for work, or you're on holiday without a bike, or can't ride for whatever reason? Manon has come up with a few easy ways to stay fit if you can't ride.

What off the bike exercise do you do to help your on bike performance?

If you feel like life is going too fast, do a plank. Scientifically proven to slow down time.

GCN should have made this video when covid just started :)

I'm a big fan of the Custard Cream lift. Open a packet of Custard Creams and lift each one individually into the mouth. Good for hand, bicep, and shoulder flexibility.

Squats " you don't wanna be throwing heavy weights onto your back and squating wrong with bad technique"
Well 3/4 of my gym would like to disagree

Calf training progression:
1. Two legged
2. One legged
3. No legged

I do like calftraining 🤩 Also a good paced walk (or run) up a steep hill is awesome and you will feel the buuuurn! 🔥

I've found running has allowed me to maintain fitness and improve my cardio stamina on my bike, feels great dropping my mates on the hills :)

Been 8 weeks since I had an op and it's been killing me not to be out on the bike!! Will definitely be trying some of these.

Morning Manon,
Good to see you presenting - I was worried they were taking you off!!!
These are helpful videos. I also scuba dive and found my greatest problem was not in the water, but climbing up/down jetty rocks. Letting myself go ends up with injuries. I will never look like Blake but core exercises (and all round fitness) has helped both my back in packing my equipment and my mountain bike riding.
Thank you Manon for these practical exercises.

Get a velomobile for the stormy weather and light snow. Get a fat tire bike for heavier snow. Get a fat tad etrike for weather that almost stops ATVs. I am a cycle commuter and I cannot strength train my way to work. At work I have bands so I can do some strength training every time I get up from my seat.

My two favourite exercises are
Heel drops: same as calve lifts but the opposite. Do a negative drop with same position as lifts then raise yourself only to the neutral position and repeat. Excellent for all lower leg and plantar issues.
Pigeon: yoga position, you might need to look up but this will stretch and strengthen you lower back, hip flexors, psoass muscles not to mention lengthen all the ligaments and tendons.
Manon. Have a GCN plank hold challenge, my record is 13:37 (mm:as)

Thanks Manon for the advice, shows I'm doing the correct exercises. Working with a PT down at my local park twice a week while waiting for my new bike to arrive.

SpikeBoarding works great. As a multi sport mix with cycling, VeloSpiking.

There are so many different types of yoga. Yoga literally means yoke as it refers to the joining of breath and body. There was a point where I saw my cycling peak and it was when I learned how to get through 90 minute hot hatha practices comfortably (hatha is a series of postures that go from standing, to balancing, to triangle, then down to the floor without flowing or doing a chaturanga between. Chaturanga may be better known as a yoga push-up). Learning how to breathe and exert your body while keeping your mind focused and at ease is a really great reason to take up specifically hatha. Vinyasa (the style that flows from one posture to another, frequently using a chaturanga to link each posture) has a lot of really great strength and endurance components, too and is an aerobic work out done at a low intensity, so great for recovery days. Once you get a solid understanding of your body in each posture, you can easily build a recovery routine and spend an hour doing passive or yin yoga. I found doing this helped my body relax after tough rides so I could sleep better.
