A yin yoga class to stretch your side body and unwind

Side body stretches are some of my favorite poses! They help open up the side of the neck, shoulder, ribcage, waist and IT band. These are often neglected areas of our bodies and releasing them is a wonderful way to feel lighter and a lot more comfortable!

I'm not using props in this practice but you might want to have a block or two close by. This is a 45 minute yin yoga class but be sure to give yourself an extra few minutes at the end to enjoy a longer savasana.

What is Yin Yoga? Yin yoga is often called the Yoga of the joints because unlike other styles of yoga, the emphasis is not on the muscles but on the deep connective tissue. Connective tissue is made up of fascia, ligaments and tendons which surround and form your joints. Yin yoga improves the range of motion in your joints and also strengthens them. The results and benefits are more flexibility and greater range of motion and also more stability within your joints. Although your muscles will also be stretched, that is not the focus of the practice. It is best to practice yin yoga while your muscles are cold and NOT warmed up, even if that sounds counter intuitive. The reason we do this is so that we can send the "stress" and the "Stretch" to the connective tissues. If the muscles are warm they will steal the focus away from the joints.

There are 3 principles of Yin Yoga.
1. Find your edge
2. Be still
3. Hold the pose

Use as many props as needed in Yin Yoga! Blocks, bolsters and straps are all great ways to support your body to make sure you are respecting your edge and not going too far.

Side body stretches are some of my all time favorite poses! These areas of our body (side of the neck, outer hip, IT band, side waist) are often neglected and can accumulate tension and tightness over time. This is a soothing 45 minute practice that will help you free up those spaces. Enjoy!

This is one of my favourites, even though I’ve only come to your videos in the last year. I was wondering if you have a front body equivalent. The back body always gets a lot of attention but I’m always much tighter in the chest, anterior shoulder, quads and hip flexors and I end up piecing together a couple of practices to get everything covered. You’re doing wonderful things in the world and I credit you with restoring my well-being in 2022. Thank you!

Omg, I always have to stop the yoga videos to stay in each posture a long time, and finally someone is doing it the "right" way! The more you breath in a posture, the more you get a real connection with your body.

can I just say how amazingly you instruct your classes? I never have to look up at the video because you explain everything so perfectly. Usually with yoga videos, I have to watch the video in its entirety first to get an idea of what I will be doing and then I play it a second time and that's when I actually do the video. That has NEVER been the case with any of your videos. It's almost as if I'm inside of your head and I know exactly what you are doing. Anyways, thank you. lol

Some very intense poses. But I felt wonderful afterwards. It seemed to release a lot of tension from my body. I love the longer classes. I am relatively new to yoga and have been doing your classes for 3 months now. I can see and feel the changes in my body which is very motivating.Thank you Kassandra.
