Despite being a TOTAL NOVICE in oval racing, I've gone and bought the new #iRacing Late Model Stock - introduced to the sim for Season 2 2023. So let's get it out on track and try not to embarrass myself or send everyone else into oblivion!

i like ovals much more that road races. playing iRacing for 3 months, in the first 2 I've done roads, currently waiting for the "C" promotion at the beginning of S2.
I've tried out ovals about a month ago, and waiting for "B" promotion... (with about 1, 5k irating, so it's not much) :D
I think the 4 most important things are (at least to me...):
- know your exact position on the track. not just because of others, but a huge throttle can lead to different result based on your position in a corner. and you have to adjust the throttling.
- have a good headset. you need to learn when your RF tyres start to tell you that "I'm getting old" or "I'm done". and mostly you can hear this from the sounds during a corner.
- look for signs ahead of you. you need to see when someone start to struggle with the tires or there is a 2-3 wide racing what easily can lead to a huge crash
- run your own race! you know how you can save tires. if you are .2-.3 slower than the pack leader? not a problem. if you have some experience (not much) and you start to learn how you can make constant lap times, on the long run it might be a lot better than lead a race for 85% and finish 4th because your RF just died... (yes, happened to me in Atlanta with an ARCA car :()

Very good effort. I found exactly the same as you when I tried this… it seems like it’s virtually impossible not to plough into a crash if one happens in front of you. Now, for some reason, all I can think about is eating a bag of Cheetos 🤷🏻‍♂️

Always check your tire wear at the end of a race or any long practice stint to compare RF and RR wear which can tell you what you need to focus on. Use a slower steering ratio so you have to turn the wheel more to make the same turn.

Most ovals don't have a single best groove as in road racing. What is fastest for one driver isn't fastest for someone else. And changing lines can help preserve tires (such as going high in one turn and low in the other).

Check your mirror a lot. When there's trouble in front you want to know how much you can safely slow down without having to look first.

Oval racing is very different than road courses. And in some cases much more stressful because you have so many cars around you all the time. From what I know about oval racing, the main thing that gets fast lap times is a strong corner exit out of turns 2 and 4. Maximizing your exit speed will help you gain ground on cars ahead of you and set yourself up for potential passes in the next couple of corners. I have an A class license in oval racing, but it has been years since I last raced them. I was a huge NASCAR fan when I first signed onto iRacing. And now I’m my own racer. Also, when you get to the Superspeedways, it’s a whole other set of racing that you’ll need to learn.

I have wins in trucks and xfinity cars at Charlotte and Talladega.

Great effort Ben! Never tried ovals before, but I look forward to seeing your progression in this!

Some quick things-
1- you will need a D class oval to run the late models in officials, rookies your choice is (more popular) street stocks or the legends cars
2-oval racing doesn’t actually have blue flags

Very much an acquired taste that Ben. Would love to see them on a road circuit though 👍

Yep, oval isn't road. It's not a question of which is harder, that's an asinine argument, it's just that it's a completely different skill-set.
But well done for keeping it together, and on a short-track no less.

LOL, I saw zero cars holding their brakes when spinning! What a mess

I know it’s week 13 so folks are going to do more stupid things than they normally would because no SR hit. I would advise against any oval racing with cautions turned off. Late models are usually proper and have cautions turned on. Might just be a week 13 thing. LM is mostly short track racing so it’s going to be chaotic. You’ll get used to it with more seat time.

I would say, next time. don't race such a short circuit. Those are brutal and you can't see around the corner to see what's coming. Unless you have VR or triples.

I'm not a big fan of oval racing, but I wish you the best of luck with it!
