It's always amusing when people discover their new hobby isn't just a fun distraction, but also has a competitive mode, ranked matches, and a professional side quest.

I looove charts/graphs!! Once you know how to read them they're invaluable.

It’s ok new crocheters, don’t be afraid! If you keep at it and continue being curious and learning new crochet stuff and practicing, you will get the hang of it and be very knowledgeable one day not too far off🙂
For me it was a difficult start, but now I get it. Just had to keep going at it and cemented the basics into my head over and over. You got this!

It's been a year and some months since I started crocheting, and lemme say: go with your own speed!! Yes it is a whole universe, and yes it can become too much, but if you tackle things slowly, one at a time, and respect your own speed, you'll get the hook of it. And lemme say: it is totally worth it!!

I learnt crochet without knowing the difference between the uk and us terms. Add to that that my actual intro to the craft was in my mother tongue, Bangla. With tips from Hindi language users spinkled in to make me the crocheter i am. Overall, i know my stitchs bit none by name. If i wanna be independent of video tutorials now i am thinking those scary drawings are the way to go. Wish me luck everybody.

I actually like the picture diagrams better because I feel like I can see what I need to do. Its the abbreviated ones that get me.

I've been crocheting since I was 10. So roughly 27 years. Graphs are great if you are doing all 1 type of stitch and something like a blanket. Wrotten instructions are great if there is a lot of counting and color changing involved. Stuffies or blankets or clothes. I still can't read the symbol instructions.

Keep up the good work. Its very rewarding being able to hold something you made yourself. Also, don't fall into the trap of having multiple works in progress. 😂

I always prefer the drawn instructions vs. written.. it's so much clearer (to me) ❤

Yes! And knitting too! I once knit a sweater for my three year old with arms as long as elephants trunks.

I’ve been crocheting since I was 9. (48 years) I’m still learning new things. I’m now learning Irish crochet. Keep challenging yourself. At first some things seem difficult. But once you get the hang of it, it will be a piece of cake.

I would translate the diagrams but you probably know. Images are very helpful in patterns. When I first learned, over 50 years ago (🙄) my mother would scold me for getting ahead of myself. Do the row you are working on, she would say, THEN worry about the next one. She was right, as the next one made sense with the base was there to crochet onto. I think that was the most helpful tip I still use. It will make sense when you get there so don’t get ahead of yourself.

i learn better watching people crochet than reading instructions that i don’t understand 😭

This captured my feelings perfectly 😆 I tried to learn crochet a few years ago and this was my experience. Really admire how fast you picked it up and how complex the stuff you're making is now!

I found some old crochet magazines my mom had at home from when she was my age and the images look like the last ones you showed 😭 and the written pattern genuinely looks like math equations. It's beyond impressive the knitting/crochet skills people had back then, any girl was taught the basics at a young age and when they reached adulthood they could interpret those magazine patterns. I'm from Portugal and the way I do crochet from YouTube videos always comes across as unpractical or weird to my mom, then she proceeds to take it from my hands and show a completely different method that has been passed down my generations (I alwaus look at is completely flabbergasted having NO IDEA what she's doing). She can go decades without crocheting and she'll grab yarn and a hook and humiliate me everytime 😅 I always go after her when I don't know how to do something and she'll just know instinctively what to do

Uyen! If you ever make another channel dedicated to crocheting, I'd definitely watch it! You teaching me to crochet would be awesome!
