I am 57 years old and 16 days post op after an outpatient anterior hip replacement. I had a spinal block & propophol anesthesia. Had no pain in recovery. The block wore off after several hours of being home. I was prescribed Tramadol for pain, anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxers, nausea pills and aspirin to prevent blood clots. Pain was the worst for the first 5-6 days post op then started to subside. I started on just ibuprofen by day 12 post op. Used a walker first 5 days, used a cane until day 12. My limp that i had for 6 years is almost gone and should resolve completely in a few more weeks. Was excited to be able to get in and out of my car with no pain today and put on pants with no pain. Also, just being able to sit down & stand up with no pain is amazing . I can walk my dog again! I can walk a few blocks a couple times a day right now. I was so nervous about having the surgery but it was well worth it.

I had an anterior replacement 35 days ago and I've already blown past all these exercises. I can do all of them easily, with added weight. My walking is also completely normal. Amazing.

These are good exercises. I'm only 22 days out of surgery and I can do all of these already. Granted thiey are done slowly and carefully. If anyone has this surgery in their future please use these techniques as soon as your hip feels ready. The first week after the operation is uncomfortable from the trauma of the procedure. You won't be able to do much besides foot rotations and butt cheeck clenched. The good news is things improve rapidly after that first week. Walk as much as you can. I stayed up on my leg all day after the 14th day and it really helped things along. The exercises shown in this vidoe are crucial and need to be practiced every day. I am glad people are thoughtful enough to make videos like this. Good luck to everyone having replacement surgery. You will be glad you did. Just get through that first week and keep at it. Results come quickly and it is very satisfying.

I’m 3 wks past anterior hip replacement. like many others, I walked out of the hospital same day w/o crutches-but had them to take home. Next day I walked 8 city blocks w crutches. There was simply no pain. The first 5 days were rarely soreness. I didn’t nees the pain pills. Was I still full of anesthesia? THEN the second week the pain came, but not in the hip, it was in and around the knee. And still is tho I think getting better. It aches and throbs. Surgeon says it’s due to not having used these particular muscles in so long. It feels more like bone pain to me. My advice to newbies-don’t push the activity no matter how easy or pain free it feels. 62 yrs old here

Hi I had a hip replacement just over 2 years ago. After my operation the surgeon said that it went well, so I asked him what all of the pink marks were-and he said it had been contaminated. As a result I had to spend the next ten days in hospital with an antibiotic drp. I returned home still taking more antibiotics. I did not do any of the recommend exercise after the operation but soon began to walk when I could. I also can not recall any sort of pain. Before my opp they said that was bone on bone.
As well as the walking me and my girlfriend also do disco style type dancing, and also since the operation I have no further problems with my Hlp. I have always been active in my life and want to continue to be. Hope that this helps all the best R. Furness

I'm 4 weeks out now from left side THA...had lotsa anxiety regarding this procedure...waited years until femur head necrosis had progressed to a high level of pain, and at surgery day check-in my blood pressure was hypertensive...but thanks to my surgeon and anesthesiologist, and much to my relief, i never had any pain whatsoever, just stayed in the hospital for first night after (highly recommended) and took the antinflammatory for first 4 weeks just-in-case, and kept in mind to take it cautiously from the day 1 post surgery...and so i did, focusing the first couple of days post surgery on just walker and crutch assisted walking... then progressing to some of the exercises shown here, but mostly kept extending the duration and frequency of my walks...today i completed a 45 minute trail hike, with no assistance...first in years, totally pain free...so grateful for the benefit this procedure has provided me and allowing my return to normality...

I had THR 4 months ago. A couple of hiccups I had was 1. I had extremely tight hip flexors, the pain and tightness was so bad I could lift my leg from a sitting position. It was my right leg, so I couldn’t drive for 6 weeks. PT outside the home really helped which I had for about 3 months. The other issue I had was about 8 weeks post op for some unknown reason I developed a severe itchy rash around the incision, which spread across my whole body. I needed a cortisone injection and oral steroids for 10 days to knock it back, and it still took weeks to totally disappear. All the docs were baffled and said they’d never seen it. Around 3 1/2 months post op I seemed to turn a corner and can do just about anything now, including walking my crazy leash pulling dog. Well worth the inconvenience for a short time

I am with an 11th months old hip replacement. Alhamdulillah I can walk normal without experiencing any pain at all. Glory be God for giving us technology.

this month marks the just over 3 year anniversity of having both hips replaced, one in July 2019 the other August 2019. I started slowly with walking, lots of stretching and swimming. The past 6 months I started weight training to include dead lifts, HIIT training, and some jogging, and tennis. No squats in the futrue..not my thing. I'm 58 and have a new life..good luck to all....take it slow at first and then build.

I walked a 100 miles in the first month after my hip replacement. My wife and I had planned Disney World vacation for 10 days which was 6 weeks after my replacement. I worked my butt off and refused to let my hip ruin the vacation. Shortly after arriving in Disney my knee took a crap with all the walking (7+ miles a day). I sucked it up and had the knee replaced shortly after returning from Disney. I’ve had zero problems rehabbing my hip and both knees. I was fortunate and never had much pain at all.

great show thanx bud, im only 1 week out from total hip surgery but im already at 9 weeks post op routine, , all because i did daily hip exercises presurgery and i ate very light salads n celery & no sugars a full week before surgery, So no problem with opiod pill related constipation plus NO inflamation in my body, , all doctors plus staff should explain these simple presurgery steps, it could make a huge difference in thousands of thier patients lives post surgery,

Just to wish well to those awaiting THR surgery and those who have recently undergone it. I had my right hip replaced in 2016 and the left in 2018. So good to get back to everyday things like being able to go for walks, go to shopping centres, dance and exercise. Now I have a new health challenge - RA affecting hands, wrists, feet, knees. Have started treatment which will take a couple of months to kick in. It's so frustrating and reminds me of the period waiting for my THR (a year's wait in both cases). Hope to be improving by Spring.

A brilliant aid to recovery. Thank you. If I never see NHS physiotherapist it would be too soon

Thank you for this, I'm 8 weeks post op, had clearance yesterday from my consultant, still being mindful of my new hip, but these exercises are great along with my others to help with my recovery.

I had my 4th THR 6 weeks ago. Each of the first two had to be replaced because of a design fault in the stem. I have just walked 2 miles with no pain. Your video is so well explained, I shall try some of the exercises which are not in the exercise booklet I have from the hospital. Thank you.
