“New-Win” is how I always thought it was pronounced growing up with lots of Vietnamese kids!

I don't want to make my own version of names outside my familiar languages. I try until I get very close to the way native speakers say their names. My name is an African name which is very difficult to pronounce for people around me (I'm in Germany). I'm always happy whenever someone gets it right.

I went to school with a girl whose name was Nguyen and she told us that her name was pronounced “Gwen” so that’s the way I was used to reading it.

I say it as Win because Vietnamese words are mainly 1 syllable.

My dad pronounces it as "nü-en", which is pretty similar to the first version. I pronounce it more like somewhere in between of "win" and "wing", which he then corrected (hence why I'm looking for the way it is actually pronounced)

Guys I need help!! My vietnamese name is Bạch Vi. Vi is easy to pronounce, just /vee/ like the letter V. But I don’t know how to write the pronounce for the word Bạch. The closest one I can think of is the word “back” with the unaspirated K. Can you think of any anglicized version for that word? Or how will you write down the pronunciation because I want to write it in my bio so people don’t get confused. Btw if I use my middle name (Bạch) and first name (Vi) instead of the first name to surname order, will it be confusing for you?

Once, later in life, I got wind of the proper pronounciation of Nguyen and do my best to slip a subtle N sound to make it "nWinn". It's as I pronounce many Scottish/Irish accented words that have a subtle consanant "rolls" without which makes the words sound flat and americanish.

IN french 🇨🇦 we would say N-Gu-Yen.
I can understand as a Quebecoise living in the US, ppl say Shag-noun and not cha-gnon for my last name

It sounds like nou-yeng to me. Although I've been told new-yen is an acceptable alternative. I really want to learn to say it correctly though.

Ngu-yin. I saw it written before I ever heard it pronounced, so I just pronounced it as it's spelled and start it with the Ng sound.

It sounded a bit like "Hoy-yen" when you said it.... but I know I'm missing the subtleties there like the soft "n" and a bit of an "oi" in the middle.

I usually say N-gwen or Wee-en, or even sometimes N-goo-yen
