For those confused:
"When" is the closest English pronunciation to the actual name bc there's supposed to be an ng sound (singer, not finger) at the beginning, but this never happens in English so a lot of people just drop the ng. Y is doing an i sound (like rhythm) that's also dropped by a lot of English speakers.

Most people can't pronounce it unless they speak a language that has the ng sound. The name is also tonal. Nguyễn (the intonation goes up at the end) is the last name is pronounced differently from Nguyên (this is more flat) which means original and can be used as a first name. As someone who has suffered from pronunciations like Nuh-goo-yen, Goo-wen, Goo-yen, etc all of my life, I have learned to just accept this pronunciation since its the best most people can do.

I don't know Vietnamese, but with such style of spelling I believe it's 【ŋuien】
It's a bit tricky if you never tried using [ŋ] as the starting sound before, but it's not hard to get used to.

I had a coworker who was born and raised in Viet Nam, and she told me it's pronounce "Nwen". I don't know if, like in many cases in the US, there is more than one correct pronunciation, but I'll go with what she told me.
