Finally just someone saying what it is supposed to sound like, rather than simply what english speakers make of it

My surname ancestor arrived from Germany in the early 18th century. The spelling and pronunciation of his last name was altered within a generation & in the next generation it was finally hammered into a last name that was manageable to the American tongue

And to further confuse this name is pronounced differently with different symbols above the letters depending whether they hail from the north Hanoi or the south hcmc.
Either way, no one can go wrong to say "when"

Yeah! It's so hard for Americans to say it, but I try to educate them if they really want to learn

I can pronounce it like that no problem. Don't try to transpose into the American accent, try to pronounce it as you hear it. That's how you learn each language.

Same, I accept anything. As long as you aren’t adding letters that don’t exist, and intentionally saying something like, “McGlory/McFlurry/Milgore”. I pronounce it like it’s English Migliore, if you know it’s Italian, have at it, but don’t pretend I don’t already say it like it’s English to make everyone’s lives easier and mess it up purposely anyways. Just call me MIG if you’re gonna act like that.

As a Filipino we pronounce it as Ngoo-Yen

Why there is Y??

Nguyen should be more commonly pronounced N’win in the American accent instead of Win in it! 🇺🇸
