Nguyễn is a very common last name in Vietnam.

The Vietnamese language can be scary for English speakers, not only does it have combinations of letters that we don't anticipate, it also has all those diacritical marks hanging from it, but there's one Vietnamese word that we're probably more likely to encounter than any other that even though we're scared and sure we can't get it right, we can actually tell pretty accurately without any particle. Language is so interesting. Very interesting that we have all of these languages that are utterly different in every right and theres nearly an infinitude of different sounds we can make that we put together to form words that convey meaning. Crazy how difficult it is to learn a foreign language because our mind and body needs to make connections and learn sounds that we have never made before, then put those sounds together to form words and sentences. Interesting how these sounds become universal and we make these mouth noises that other people can understand. And written language is even crazier, universal symbols that then relate to different mouth noises, so awesome!

That's my supervisor's last name. He didn't correct me on my first week of work and just chuckled almost every time I said it until I asked if I said it right. Then he told me how to pronounce it. 😂
