The story begins in 1967, when 19-year-old Suzanne is in deep mental distress. Not only does she hallucinate from time to time, but she is also caught up in an incestuous affair with her parents' friend's husband. Overwhelmed by her mental torment and the chaos of her life, she is eventually diagnosed with “borderline personality disorder” and follows the advice to be admitted to the Claymoore Psychiatric Hospital.
In this special hospital, Suzanne makes a unique group of new friends. Georgina is a compulsive liar, always immersed in her own fictional world; Polly has an inexplicable fear of fire, which is deeply imprinted in her heart; Daisy cannot eat in front of others, and harbors unknown sensitivities and obstacles. The most special of them is Lisa, who has an anti-social personality. She has a rebellious character and makes a lot of headaches for the hospital management, but also deeply affects the girls around her.
With these new friends, Suzanne goes on one wild adventure after another. In their own way, they rebel against the injustice of fate and pursue their true selves in the oppressive hospital environment.
