I went through this in my early 20's. It changed my life immeasurably when I stopped parroting without understanding or supporting with evidence. I could hear myself, exactly as he described. This is why I'm adamant that talking is so important to discovering how we really feel about something: we can hear our own doubt and bullshit. It's also why we should be allowed to verbalise a thought without fear of recrimination, as fear of speaking inhibits understanding.

This guy is my modern-day practical philosopher, my guide to understanding myself and my surrounding so much better!!!

The thing I enjoy about Peterson as a new listener is that listening to him, and I don't mean as an insult, it sounds like a train of association. He doesn't seem to make eye contact, he talks looking down or eyes closed, he carefully considers what he says and he speaks precisely, and he goes on short rabbit trails, so when I listen to him I feel I'm getting the rock bottom truth and I'd better listen because I won't be hearing it the same way again.

Wow hearing him say he doesn’t think he’s naturally a good person and that he has to work at it really stood out to me. I feel the exact same way about myself at times

My 2 cents in the pond: I recently started being firm and assertive and when I do it I can literally feel some kind of dopamine inside me that says "yes. you passed this test and took the right road".

like JP says, hard to explain/ articulate that. 🙏🏾

I think of all the things Peterson has talked about, this was the single most powerful revelation in my life. Ever since I took this advice to heart, not only have I stopped feeling weak, but my words appear to be causing the world to reorient itself tiny bit by bit.

Sidebar: I'm surprised Peterson didn't point out that one of the alternate definitions for "true" is something like "properly aligned." Eg "the arrow flew true to its target."

"trouble is more interesting than boring". Not the most eloquent words JP has ever said, but it sums up what I did in the winter of 2014/15. I've finally realized the actual cause of all my inner turmoil. Thank God. Now I can work at it and interest myself with perpetual challenge

I do this all the time, it's terrible. Everything I do or say I analise and judge myself on. I'll realize when I feel weak and ill think to myself "people are noticing your weakness, they aren't buying this".

I just had a wonderfully productive conversation with my close friend and this video popped up in my feed. I think it was the first time that I was truly honest with him about what I believe. As Jordan says, it was a huge relief to no longer have that kind of cognitive dissonance between what I say and what I really think. It was nice to hear him put it so eloquently
