I’ve walked by so many people who will tell their dog “it’s okayyy” while their dog barks obsessively at my calm dogs passing by.
It’s like nails on a chalkboard. People don’t realize they are reinforcing their dog to continue to bark, get anxious & react unnecessarily at other dogs. It’s a sick cyclical cycle. I hope they’re taking notes here!

I'm going to put this into practice today, how long does it take to train yourself to be a good leader?

Remember dogs don't understand words. The funny thing is saying it's ok can either cause a dog to associate those words with the unsure feeling and can make situations worse in the future, or the tone can help them learn the opposite. Shitty thing is there is no way to know how the dog will respond until the behavior happens. That's why techniques for helping the dog understand the situation will always work better. Once the dog understands that it really is ok is when you want to mark the words "it's ok". Say it when the dog is happy and sure of it's self and it will remember that in times when it is unsure

Emotional dumping on your dog. I also find the petting is self soothing thing people do for themselves.
