The WORST Supplements For Your Thyroid

Using the right supplements has the potential to help you manage your thyroid symptoms and support your thyroid. Using the wrong supplements can do the exact opposite.

In fact, using the right supplements is even worse because not only will they not help you feel better, but you're also wasting money.

This video outlines some of the WORST supplements and WORST formulations that thyroid patients can take.

If you are looking to improve thyroid function and better manage your symptoms then you'll want to avoid these supplements and ingredients:

1. Magnesium oxide.
2. Zinc oxide.
3. High-dose iodine.
4. Cyanocobalamin.
5. Vitamin D2.

Instead of using these formulations, you will want to opt for magnesium glycinate, zinc glycinate, low-dose iodine, methylcobalamin, and vitamin D3.

NOTE: I incorrectly stated that the Japanese consume 1-3 GRAMS per day. What I meant (and what the picture shows) is that they consume 1-3 MILLIGRAMS per day. Sorry for the confusion!

Abridged version…
1.) preferred mg supplement is Magnesium glycinate
2.) preferred zinc supplement zinc citrate or zinc glycinate
3.) >1000ug iodine doses are to be avoided. 150-300ug
4.) preferred B12 supplement methylcobalamin, adenosylcobalamin, or hydroxycobalamin.
5.) get 1000-10000IU of D3 daily.

It's a sad fact that our GP's have little to zero training in hyper/hypo thyroid disease... after many years a nurse mentioned me going to an endochronologist for my care... she is not an MD but a highly trained nurse! She got it under control for me...

Great info! I was able to reverse Hashimotto Thyroiditis by taking Magnesium G, Brazil nuts and Iodide-iodine. I'm 60, take no meds, I do intermittent fasting. I take quite a few supplements according to my needs. I feel great!

Never looked back from seeing a naturopathic practitioner who diagnosed my thyroid issue when the medical system left me for dead. She prescribes all the correct and real suppliments. I am on NO pharmaceuticals whatsoever at 56 years old. Used natural supplements through menopause too.
Glad you are telling people the wrong suppliments can be dangerous too used incorrectly. I also cannot have iodine.

Dr Childs, I saw a Dr. Berg video on D3. 2-3 yrs ago that changed my life! For autoimmune he recommended 40, 000 IU's daily! I did that for a few months. My skin looked amazing. My dark circles went away, it reduced inflammation and made the terrible pain so much less! He said 40, 000 IU's puts autoimmune into remission.
Once I felt better I dropped down to 10, 000 IU's.

My vitamin D level is low so my doctor prescribed vitamin D at a high dosage. I assumed it was D3 and I realized that it was D2. I stopped taking it and went to a D3 and K2 drops. So, unfortunately, some doctors don’t even know this about vitamin D and DO prescribe it! That’s why as a Hashimoto’s patient, you have to seek out doctors like you to stay educated.

high doses of Iodine (especially artificial Iodine) are very harmful for the Thyorid gland - thank you for mentioning this

It is both fascinating and frustrating to listen to various MDs and DOs concerning chronic issues. On salt intake, iodine dosage, red meat yes, red meat no, etc., one says X, another Y. Add to that list some D.Pharms. I have had far better success working with doctors of Naturopathic Medicine with the rarest exceptions. Sadly, they are licensed only in some 14 states. The med school in my state has several on their teaching staff.

Started losing hair 4 weeks after supplementing iodine. 2 years later and 70 percent hair loss I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. I was able to then track my start of hair loss started but I never put it together until I was diagnosed and saw an overdose iodine could cause hyperthyroidism. Years of hell and only finally starting to recover please be careful.

I was fully aware of all you said in your other video, but this one has added so much invaluable info to me. I knew that cyanocobalamin is toxic and so I've been taking methylcobalamin, but in order to increase my B12 levels, I started taking a complex B vitamin tablets which sadly included the poisonous cyanocobalamin and I FAILED to check the label small print. Well, guess what, my TSH, which had always been normal, rose 3-fold. The only changes I made to my eating habits were to improve them last year right after taking a blood test . Too many people have genetic polymorphisms and haven't a clue about them. THANK YOU EVER SO MUCH, DOCTOR! HAVE A BLESSED EASTER SUNDAY!

Iodized salt: tricky for those of us who like salt. I didn't realize I was overdosing on Iodine with my salt.
TSH was 0.061, I stopped using Iodized salt and it went up to 0.24 in about a month and staying there now for months. Still below normal but lots better. (Normal FT4 I'm a male in late 30's. Didn't expect I'd be dealing with this.)

After more than a year of D3 supplementation, my levels were still too low. My doctor switched it to D2 - a super high dose to be taken once a week, and it finally raised my D levels to the normal range.

She said not everyone absorbs D3.
