3 Supplements You Should NEVER take | Dr. Janine

In this video, Dr. Janine shares three supplements you should NEVER take. She talks about how folic acid is synthetically made, look for folate. She looks at synthetic vitamin C usually made from genetically modified corn; looks for vitamin C from berries. She explains how synthetic B-complex supplements are typically derived from the petrochemical industry. Lastly, Dr. Janine suggests always looking for whole food supplements without fillers or flow agents like magnesium stearate.

I love how Dr Janine gets right to the point, no verbal filer. You don't have to listen to 20 mins before getting to the point. You are the best. Thank you so very very much.

The great chemist, Linus Pauling, twice a Nobel laureate and winner of numerous awards and honours, is considered one of the greatest scientists ever. Alternative medical practitioners, particularly those advocating high-dose vitamic C, love to point out that Linus Pauling used mega doses of vitamin C daily, over 20g a day in fact, for many years, and he creditedn his good health at an old age to this vitamin. But what these practitioners don't say or know is that Linus Pauling used plain old synthetic ascorbic acid.

Many health practitioners have little actual knowledge of science and keep making fundamental mistakes and promote wrong ideas. There's a misconception about "natural" vs lab-made supplements. Other than stereo or mirror isomers, chemicals behave exactly the same way or produce the same effects regardless of how that chemical was produced, ie whether extracted from "natural" sources or produced synthetically. Put in another way, a molecule is a molecule, regardless of its origins. The only exception is isomers - mirror images of molecules.

The other misconception propounded by some health practitioners is that a naturally sourced vitamin is not only more complete and superior to a synthetic version, but that the synthetic vitamin is harmful or depletes your body of nutrients. The truth, as said before, is that both vitamins perform exactly the same, given the same conditions. The only caveat is that ALL vitamins work synergistically with other nutrients in vivo. Also, most vitamins often require co-factors in order to carry out their functions. A "natural" vitamin C, for example, may have these co-factors in place already - bioflavonoids, copper, and the enzyme tyrosinase. Synthetic vitamin C is pure ascorbic acid. But this does not mean that the synthetic vitamin C is useless. In and of itself ascorbic acid offers important physiological and immuno protection to the body. And whatever co-factors it needs, it gets them from the person's diet.

Yet another misconception is that everything natural is good, and everything synthetic is bad. Wrong again.

Regarding folic acid, for a subset of the population, it may be harmful because these people cannot effectively convert folic acid to the more biologically active forms, such as methylfolate. But many people still derive benefit from folic acid.

As for B-complex, most people would benefit from taking a B-complex, even synthetic. The only caveat is that for a subset of the population that has low methylation capacity, folic acid and the cyanocobalamin form of vitamin B12, are useless, even somewhat harmful. These people would need methylated forms of these 2 vitamins.

She is wrong....as a boxing trainer, B -complex is a absolute necessity. You will have more energy, feel less stressed and have a more clam and focused attitude. Its water soluble. Your body will excrete what it doesn't need.

One thing you should NEVER do is tell anyone not to do something but don’t give them an alternative. People aren’t doing things to just be doing things. There is a purpose and if you cannot give them an alternative or another solution then you’re not helping. Ok, folic acid is not recommended then what is? Same for the others. This is not hard. Either you give solutions or become part of the problem.

lies in every statement in the video. You're not even a real doctor. Naturopathy is alternative (unproven, quack) medicine.

1) Folic acid is a dietary supplement that should be avoided. It's not a natural substance, it's not folate, research shows that folic acid may increase the risk of disease

False. Folic acid is a synthetic form of folate, a B vitamin that is essential for human health. It plays a crucial role in DNA synthesis, cell division, and red blood cell formation. While folic acid is not naturally occurring in the same form as folate, it is readily converted to folate in the body. Research has consistently demonstrated the benefits of folic acid supplementation, particularly for pregnant women to prevent neural tube defects. Some studies have suggested a potential link between high folic acid intake and certain cancers, but the overall evidence suggests that the benefits outweigh the risks.

2) Ascorbic acid is a dietary supplement that should be avoided. They are often extracted with a strong acid which is harmful to teeth.

False. Ascorbic acid, also known as vitamin C, is an essential nutrient that plays a vital role in immune function, collagen production, and antioxidant protection. The extraction process of ascorbic acid involves using a mild acid, such as citric acid, which does not pose any harm to teeth. In fact, vitamin C is beneficial for oral health as it contributes to gum health and protects against periodontal disease.

3) Vitamin B complex is a dietary supplement that should be avoided. They are usually obtained from petrochemical products, which means that vitamin B complex is more likely to cause harm than benefit.

False. Vitamin B complex is a group of eight essential B vitamins that are crucial for various bodily functions, including energy metabolism, nerve function, and red blood cell formation. While some forms of vitamin B complex supplements may be derived from petrochemical sources, these are processed to ensure safety and purity. Numerous studies have demonstrated the benefits of vitamin B complex supplementation for various health conditions, such as fatigue, nerve damage, and cognitive decline.

4) Multivitamins often contain magnesium stearate, this is a harmful additive even at the dosage it is usually used in multivitamins

False. Magnesium stearate is a common additive in various food and pharmaceutical products, including multivitamins. It is a safe and inert substance used as a lubricant and flow agent to improve the manufacturing and consumption of products. Extensive safety studies have confirmed that magnesium stearate is well-tolerated even at high doses.

5) Multivitamins often contain silica, this is a harmful additive even at the dosage it is usually used in multivitamins

False. Silica, also known as silicon dioxide, is a naturally occurring mineral found in many foods and is commonly used as a food additive. It is a safe and harmless substance used as an anti-caking agent to prevent clumping and ensure product consistency. Numerous studies have established the safety of silica at the levels used in food and supplements.

6) Multivitamins often contain titanium dioxide, this is a harmful additive even at the dosage it is usually used in multivitamins

False. Titanium dioxide is a naturally occurring mineral found in many foods and is widely used as a food additive. It is a safe and inert substance used as a coloring agent to enhance the appearance of products. Extensive safety evaluations have concluded that titanium dioxide is safe at the levels used in food and supplements.

5MTHF is indeed natural form of folic acid. Not sure why you don't differenciate. This form is natural and very beneficial for us. It's also in advanced methylation combo supplement with P5P, and B12 to reduce inflammation.

1:42 So how do you avoid vitamins with fillers & flow agents? Nearly all vitamins I’ve seen contain magnesium stearate, or silicon dioxide, or both.

Sorry, you might be right, but throwing out words like "natural", "whole foods", and "genetically modified"; are not informative - therefor not persuasive.

Thanks for the great info! Can you please recommend some good brands of multivitamins to take? I think it is hard to know what brands are trustworthy and what exactly does a "wholefood" vitamin mean? where woud you buy one and can you show an example? Thank you!

Ascorbic Acid is a mild acid. Also, I often have a small amount (from 1 teaspoon to 1tablespoonful) of apple cider vinegar with meals. These acids (Ascorbic Acid and apple cider vinegar) help with digestion and breakdown of proteins in the stomach and absorbtion of minerals. However, your correct an acidic mouth can destroy tooth enamel and contribute to cavities. Solution : Immediately after finishing your meal brush teeth with toothpaste or at the least rinse out mouth with plenty of water (preferably with a pinch of baking soda dissolved) and spit out the water. This will de-acidify the mouth. Ideal situation - the oral cavity, alkaline - the stomach acidic during and immediately after a meal. Also, the preferred form of folic acid to take as a supplement is Not folic acid, but methyl folate.

The way I get natural B's is from nutritional yeast. I usually sprinkle it on cooked asparagus, broccoli, potatoes, sauteed spinach, and popcorn. It adds a cheesy flavor to foods.
